"Poor little kid, was my brother being extra mean to you?" Mira heard a smug taunt directed at her from above the trees. She tried really hard to avoid falling down after the sudden voice which caused her to flinch. Not hard enough apparently though.
"Easy there kid." Kenji stopped her from falling forward on her face by holding the back of her shirt's collar, a split second before she physically hit the ground. He looked at the buckets and Silo slithering away. "That dull snake is guarding you huh Mira Nagami?"
"Kenji." Mira whispered suddenly, intimidated as he looked her down. He was about a foot taller than her, as like Kai but had more proximity to her than Kai has ever had. Kenji inched his face closer to her frame and smiled.
Mira frowned at him. Something about him felt off to her now. He looked mad, even though he was smiling widely.
"Where did Silo go?" She asked a bit curiously as the snake had clearly breached its master's order and left her alone. Calls never disobey even when they disagree.
"She spites me a little. Well if you must know, she ran off to let him know I'm here alone with you. My sweet little brother does not trust me very much." He laughed but in a snarky way.
"Let go of the buckets Mira Nagami, no one's here now." He whispered the last part in her ears. Mira, now intimidated by him, stepped a bit away trying to release herself from his grip while still holding onto the buckets.
"Why are you scared little friend? I'm just trying to help." He gave her a fake pout. Mira tried to calm herself down. Would Nina be scared of him? Probably not.
Be a brave girl Mira, don't be weak.
She repeated like a mantra. He's a member of their hometown, he won't hurt her.
While in thought, she had not realized that he had released her and she had been subconsciously moving away from him. Kenji, with a cheshire grin moved in front of her in a flash. Mira flinched and gasped a little at his fast pace. Rogoms were so strong, what did she expect? He was right, no one was here. If he were to kill her, no one would notice or care.
"I'm just trying to be your friend girl, why are you scar-"
He stopped speaking and stood up straighter from his bent posture. Mira scrunched her eyebrows a little in confusion as his blank face then revived its sinister grin.
"Hello little brother." Kenji said as in a split second Kai moved in front of Mira, covering her behind him with his body, with Silo appearing next to him.
"Get out of here Kenji." Kai said with a stoic expression. Mira felt the air around them shift. She felt Kai's anger? Frustration? Some kind of gloom-ridden emotion she can't quite capture but she felt it.
"Step back." She heard him instruct her. She obliged immediately, still holding onto her buckets.
"Aw I'm heart-broken Mirabelle, you follow his words but not mine. However shall I live now? I-" Kenji dramatically held his heart. His smirk then disappeared as Kai in a split second captured him and held him with a dagger at his throat against a tree.
Kenji smirked a little at Kai.
"Relax little bro, I am not planning on hurting her yet. Geez you're protective of that thing. But for your information, you're scaring her." Kenji said as Kai glared a little at him. He then let go of Kenji with a sigh.
"How cute, anyway I'll take my leave now. Goodbye kid, Silo, Mira Nagami. See you soon." Kenji said before looking like he disappeared. Mira wished she could run as fast as that one day.
"You did not let go of your buckets." Kai stated after a while, still facing the other direction with his hands inside the pockets of his dark colored pants.
"Stop staring." He instructed while turning around with a neutral expression.
"You're speaking to me so who am I supposed to stare at?" She replied snarkily. For a split second she felt as if she saw a glint in his eyes.
"I see you followed my instructions and did not let go of the buckets." Kai said, staring at her fingers which had turned red due to the constricted blood flow. Mira nodded with a huge smile. She had finally pleased him. It was one of the hardest things she had to endure physically but he was finally going to be happy with her. She was finally going to get his approval, be the perfect student and his favorite one-
"Are you stupid?! If the situation calls for it, you let go of the damn buckets." Kai glared at her.
WAS HE KIDDING?!
Mira really thought she did something right for once. And he was angry at her for obeying him?
"But I acted on your instructions."Mira said dumbfoundedly.
"I'm not always going to be there for the next few instructions. If you sensed that you're in danger and should run, you have to be really dumb to be running with two filled buckets. It's pathetic that I even have to inform you of that."
It made sense. It was not the smartest thing to do, running with two buckets. But Mira was about thirty percent sure that Kenji would not hurt her.
"But I-"
"You won't survive as a ninja if I have to spoon feed common sense to you." Kai added bitterly.
"Sorry." Mira mumbled looking down feeling a bit indignant.
"Don't apologize, not now or ever. It does not take back or fix things. Think about what to do next instead of what you've already done. Leave the buckets and sit." Kai instructed before letting go of Silo.
He then leaned against a tree and stared her down.
"Stop staring." She mumbled grumpily, plucking some grass, trying to throw his own words against him.
"Why were you playing with grass back when I asked you to attack me?" He then curiously asked. "If it was some kind of joke, you're going to get into more trouble right now."
"I was trying to practice impel. Everyone in my family can do it, other than me. I was hoping I'd learn it right then and there, and then attack you..." Mira said with a sheepish smile.
He then moved towards her and bent his upper body forward to reach her level and smacked the back of her head lightly which caused her to groan a little.
"I'll keep doing that until it knocks some sense into you. Do you really expect to learn new powers amidst real battles like you're the main character in a cartoon? You have zero powers and terrible intuitions. How did you expect that to work?" He said glaring.
"Luck?" Mira said now playing with the grass she tore, avoiding his frightening gaze.
"You're going to have to stop relying on snark before it starts testing my patience."
"It's not snark, I'm being serious." Mira frowned. Kai then sat down in front of her.
"Stop relying on luck, it gets you nowhere. If you feel useless, learn to be more useful. Sulking won't get you anywhere but further down. Here." Kai said, moving his hands forward and handing her some grapes he got before Silo called him back here.
Mira gasped out with joy and snatched the grapes away. She shoved a bunch in her mouth while giving him a huge goofy grin.
"Stupid girl." Kai said, rolling his eyes with a small smile which caused her to giggle.
She then managed to say, "Fank you" to him. He patted her head before getting up to leave.
"Kai?" She said before he left. "Would you have praised me if I let go of the buckets."
She then looked at him as he turned half of his face around, with his back still facing her and a slight grin on his face, "No, you would have been disobeying my instructions. Probably would have still scolded you. Now get some rest and meet me back here in six hours."
He then raised his left hand and said, "Goodbye trouble," before disappearing.
