They had left the town three hours ago, but since then not a single word was exchanged between the pair.
Mira had not looked at Kai once, all Kai had done was look at her. Her puffy eyes, the sniffing and that red nose were hard for him to ignore. And boy did he feel like shit.
"Are you tired?" He asked. She had not whined once this time. Not even a slight groan.
She shook her head no, still staring ahead.
He left her alone after, maybe that's what she needed right now.
They reached the town a few hours later and he pulled her closer to him but she moved away.
"Mira, stay close to me. Be mad, but stay near me. It's not safe." Kai said.
"Doesn't matter." She shrugged, but stayed near them. Kai frowned at her words but let it go.
They walked together, as another awkward silence took its place between the two.
Kai hated this. She looked lost, and he felt like shit. But that doesn't change the fact, they can't be together.
The place was much quieter than they had expected it to be. Mira's arm brushed next to a sharp twig causing her to hiss in pain.
"Are you okay?" Kai asked with widened eyes, frantically grabbing her arms to check for any wounds. She stared into his eyes whilst they zoomed in on the blood flowing from her arms.
"Does it hurt?" He asked looking straight in her eyes, only to be greeted by the water floating on top of it.
"Yes." She sobbed and he frowned looking down, feeling like the biggest idiot in the world.
The next second was a blur for both.
He took her in his arms, and rubbed the back of her head as she cried. He then looked up straight at the sky and just allowed her to let it out.
"We can't be together." He mumbled and then shut his eyes close.
"Let's finish the mission. I wanna go home." She let go and wiped her tears. He hesitantly nodded.
"Stay, beside me." He said and she nodded, avoiding eye contact again. He focused ahead, concentrating only on the mission. He cannot be careless from this point on.
They heard some cheering sounds around when they entered instead of the mini-war Kai expected to witness. He looked in front to see a bunch of men running away.
"I'm Kai Zaveri, rank rogom. I was sent here by central-town Ahana. This is my partner Mira Nagami, rank mito." Kai greeted an elderly man who had watery eyes.
"Kai Zaveri is here everyone!" The man screamed with as much might as an old man could get. The whole town cheered and cried of joy.
"What's going on?" Mira mumbled, confused.
"They ran as soon as they heard you were coming sire!" Another one said.
Oh.
Kai sighed, that explained the running men.
"I still need to chase after them. They might come back as soon as I'm gone. Stay here okay? I'll keep Silo with you, just in case." Kai said and flashed away.
Mira looked at the guy as he fought the men. Within the next few seconds they had been tied up and severely injured. Kai was such a simple man. He liked modest things, had a moderate house living by himself and had easier dreams to accomplish. An extraordinary ninja, wanting an unadorned life.
She contrasted him a lot. But contrast is good right?
She saw how in between his fights, he kept turning to her.
