CHAPTER FOURTY-TWO: TILL DEATH DO US PART...

PART I

EMILIA

We were lingering outside the Library's doors, narrowly avoiding staff and guests alike as they continued to loiter in the hallway.

While a majority of the people were still in the Ballroom, no doubt gossiping about the flakiness of their hosts absence, they were a couple people here dawdling throughout the Manor's halls.

"You ready?"

"As I'll ever be."

"On the count of three..." Kai said.

"One..." I counted off

"Two...

"Three..."

A stomping of footsteps halted our movements, making us snap our heads to the side and watch as Henry huffed and trudged his way down the hall.

"Henry?" I called to him "What's the matter?"

"Mama is making me go home" he growled in only a way a child could "Said it's too late for me to be here right now. Which is ridiculous considering I've spent some other days staying later than this!"

I shot Kai a knowing look, wondering if the evil Mrs.Wright knew about the Devereux's demise all this time, wanting to spare her son from witnessing his friend and Master being tragically murdered.

Kai ushered him out the hall and to the main entranceway "Well, mothers do know best Son."

"BUT I WANT TO SEE BASH AND LADY AMALIA DANCE THEIR FIRST DANCE!" Henry stomped his little foot in a tantrum "I HELPED HIM PRACTICE FOR TWO WEEKS WITH THAT STUPID DANCE!"

"This is an adult party Henry" I told him gently, not wanting to upset him further, but at the same time wanting him to urgently leave "I'm sure Lord Devereux will recant his story to you tomorrow."

That's it...I'm going to Hell for lying to an innocent child and making him a promise Lord Devereux certainly can't keep.

Henry pouted "But shouldn't I at least say goodbye..."

"No!" Kai and I said quickly shooting each other worried looks as the grandfather clock rang once "You best be going home now before it gets any darker!"

"But..."

"Go home Henry" Kai said firmly, leaving no room for arguments "Before I send word to your mother."
