I arrived to 1st hour only moments before class began. I planned it this way to hopefully avoid talking to Parisa or any of the other girls I saw at the girls night. Of course fate was once again not on my side and our teacher, Mrs. Bielman, was having one of those days where she didn't start class immediately on time.
"Hey River!" Parisa said, approaching my desk and kneeling down to be closer to me. "I like your um... shirt,"
"My plain black t-shirt?" I asked, kind of feeling rude, but I'd already said it, so I couldn't take it back.
"Yeah... Hey, about the other night,-"
"I'm sorry. Really I am."
"No, It was fun. I mean until... you know. But I think I'd like to hang out again... you know, if you would-"
"Parisa, come here!" Parisa's boyfriend, Eric, called, interrupting our conversation.
"Thanks," I replied, before Parisa excused herself to return to the gorgeous Eric.
I turned and looked towards Eric. Our eyes locked and he gave me a truly unfriendly look. Geeze. What had I done to that guy to make him not like me so much?! Ugh. This is what I don't understand about high school. Why do people talk bad about people for nor reason? Why are people preoccupied with people who work so hard to stay away from them?!
Finally 4th period came to a close, and I took my sweet time waking over to my e-scooter.
"Hey River!" a loud voice said, making me instantly feel flushed. Jacob.
I know it's wrong to like someone like Jacob. H3ll, I'm half afraid of him half the time from how animated he can be, and yet I just can't stop feeling all flustered when I'm around him. He looks at me like I take up as much space as any giantess in his gaze. It's like I feel him baring deeply into me. Okay, that's crazy talk, but it is what it is. He looks at me like he can see all of my fine details, just like an artist admiring their art piece. I got a rush of excitement when I stepped into Jacobs palm. This should be scary, but somehow he was the Giant I felt the most comfortable being held by. Well... him and Blue.
"How are you doing?"
"I'm good. How about you?" I responded, doing my best to make eye contact with him while eating my bread and olive oil.
"What are you having? Just bread?"
"No. Bread and olive oil,"
"That's it?"
"Yeah..."
"I would be so hungry if I only ate bread and olive oil, but I guess that might be enough to fill up someone so tiny,"
My entire face felt warm. He thought I was tiny. Of course he did, he's a freaking giant. It's just- who ever thinks of me as tiny. Short- absolutely. Thick with too many curves- story of my life. But never something cute like being tiny... I liked it.
"So how'd you like art class so far? Sorry I didn't get to talk to you in art,"
"That's okay. I like that class. I think the teacher Mr. L is fun,"
"I'm sure he told you he's best buds with Trent right?"
"Yeah,"
"I'm excited to get to do some of the 3d art. I haven't had much experience with 3D art,"
"Same."
I wish I was better at keeping this conversation going more, but my answers tended to be short. I was just trying to seem normal around Jacob. My friend? Yes. Jacob, my friend.
