9. Crush Culture

Regulus had a mission now. He had to figure out the sexuality of his best friend. Of course he couldn't just ask, Evan was too unpredictable, he was good at hiding his true self. If Regulus even slightly gave himself away, evan could find out about him and tell everyone, and he couldn't risk that. But if there was a chance - he had to know.

The first person he thought to go to was Pandora, Evans twin sister. She was someone Regulus knew he couldctalk to, he could spill his deepest secrets to her and she would not say another word to a single soul. For a Slytherin, she was such a... Hufflepuff. Or maybe Ravenclaw. Regulus always felt that she didn't belong in this cursed house.

Regulus managed to catch Pandora alone in the library one day after dinner, Barty and Evan were nowhere to be seen.

"Pandora, I have a question for you... its about evan." Regulus took a seat next to her.

She hummed as if to tell him to go on, so he did. "Is Evan... in any way, gay?" He whispered quiet enough that only she could hear.

"I don't know. Is this about Barty?" She asked knowingly.

"I'm sorta dating Barty but -" Regulus's words were cut off.

"He's got goo goo eyes for Evan. It's hard not to notice." She smiled

"Yeah. I wasn't sure who to ask. I don't know if it's safe for me to ask him myself, you know how he gets." Pandora nodded solemnly. Unlike Pandora, Evan fully fit in with the Slytherins. He never bullied anyone or badmouthed anything, but he never stopped anyone who did.

"I could ask him. I'll tell you if I find anything out. Are you trying to get those two together?"

Regulus nodded. "If he does like guys, I have a way to make him jealous. He gets really impulsive and angry when he is." Regulus smiled

"I'm not even going to try to question what's going on between you and Barty." She laughed.

"I don't know either." Regulus mumbled.

Regulus knew it was a long shot, but he remembered the night of their small party, and remembered what Marlene said. She was gay, and somehow knew Evan. He figured she was invited through Dorcas, but based on Evans introduction, he knew her as well, and Regulus needed to know if it was anything deeper than acquaintances.

She was a Hufflepuff, so he had to find a way to find her alone, which proved to be harder than he originally thought. Eventually he managed to catch her in an empty corridor and asked her to meet him in the back of the library after curfew.

At first he thought she wouldn't show up. He was there for a good half an hour when he thought he would give up soon and go back to his common room. It was then that he heard the door quietly open and close and he saw her approach slowly.

"Sorry, got caught up by filch. What did you want?" She crossed her arms.

"Are you close with Evan?" Regulus asked.

Her face stayed in a stone cold expression as she contemplated her response, but eventually she nodded, "I'd like to say so. About as close as a Slytherin and Hufflepuff can get. I understand you're his best friend. One of them, but I'm second to that. "

Regulus nodded in understanding, "I have a question. I understand it's personal but i feel like if you can't tell me, nobody can." Regulus started.

"Go on." She motioned, leaning against the bookshelves next to her. He wasn't sure if she wad acting like this to seem tough around Regulus, or if this is how she always was, but it was strange compared to her manner during the party.

"Is Evan gay, or bi, or anything in any way? Does he like guys? Regulus asked.

"Why? You looking to shag your best friend?" She asked.

Regulus wanted to gag, "of course not. It's for Barty." Regulus explained.

"So you noticed." She smiled. "Barty is so blatantly obvious I don't know how Evan hasn't found out about his crush." Marlene smiled lightheartedly, "Evan is bi, by the way. Don't tell him it told you and don't involve me in whatever you plan to do with that information"

Regulus nodded, "wouldn't dream of it... Thanks." He said

"Awe I always heard you were cold hearted but here you are, showing some gratitude, and possibly setting your friends up. Maybe you aren't as stone cold as Sirius says." She smiled and with that she walked off.

So she is friends with Sirius too... Regulus felt his blood boil, but forced himself to calm down as he snuck back down to the Slytherin common room.

He walked back into his dormitory to see Evan and Barty staring at him, arms crossed like parents who caught their kid sneaking back home in the middle of the night. "Where were you young man?" Evan asked in a dumb "Mom voice."

Regulus rolled his eyes, "nowhere mom"

"Ooh someone's got secrets. C'mon I thought we were mates," Barty said with a stupid smile on his face.

"I fell asleep in the library." Regulus lied before laying down on his bed, utterly exhausted.

"Oh did you now?" Barty asked

"Yes, now leave me alone I'm tired." Regulus mumbled before pulling his wand out, spelling the curtains of his four-poster closed. His roommates never closed theirs, but he valued his privacy much more than those two did.

Putting all that effort into his friend's stupid crush seemed ultimately idiotic to Regulus, sometimes even thinking about romance made Regulus want to rip his heart out and spill his guts, but sometimes he just wished he could feel the same way for someone the way Barty feels for Evan. How Romeo felt for Juliet. How... Regulus could bring up countless examples. All that mattered was... He had never felt that kind of love for anyone.

im so sad, my playlist on spotify isnt correct anymore bc the young veins deleted all their songs off spotify :'(

so im pretty sure this chapter got out of order, but it should still make sense w/ where im posting it ( i dont remember when it was supposed to be but im pretty sure it was supposed to be a chapter or 2 ago) are the chapters showing out of order for anyone else? im going to start adding numbers bc for some reason its completely going out of order. I might have to completely delete and reupload everything bc i had this happen to a fic before and I couldnt fix it. If this chapter ends up being broken I will end up doing that. Ive only ever had this happen on wattpad and I hate it.
