The marauders arrived at the camp nearing sunset. It was made up of nicely built cabins deep in the woods. Remus didn't know much, but he knew these people living here were important to the war cause. He had to find out how and recruit them before Voldemort got a chance.
A woman walked outside before Remus got a chance to approach the front door.
"You're one of us."
Remus gasped. "You're a - how do you know?" He studied this woman. She was probably in her mid 40's, her age showing through the wrinkles on her face.
"Well, I mean first and foremost - your scars. But after doing what I do for as long as I have, I can just sense it. You reek of werewolf." The woman explained, and even sniffed a little to prove her point.
Remus wanted to shrink backward, but he leaned on his cane, "so what is this place?" He asked.
"This is a safe place for us. Away from society. Away from wizards, muggles, and greyback. My question is, why are you here with wizards?" The woman asked defensively.
"These are my friends. We were informed that greyback was going to try to recruit you, so we - mainly I - was sent to help you." Remus said.
"And who exactly are you guys. Why should I let you around the others?" The woman crossed her arms.
"My name is Remus Lupin. Greyback turned me into a werewolf as a child because of my father, who works at the ministry and spread anti-werewolf propaganda. Dumbledore let me attend Hogwarts, where I met my friends. This is James and Sirius, both animagi who have helped make my transformations less painful." Remus frowned at the fact that Peter couldn't come. He was sent on his own separate mission and couldn't make it, but maybe it was best to have fewer people on this mission.
"I see. I am Astrid. I am sort of like a caretaker of the others here. I will let you guys stay here as long as you stay out of trouble, and I advise that the wizards be gone before the full moon." She said and moved out of the doorway to let them enter.
There were a bunch of others hanging around. Some elderly, and even more children. One of them was just a toddler.
"Did Greyback turn them too?" Remus asked.
Astrid nodded solemnly. "He's been on a rampage recently. We're just lucky he hasn't found this place yet." She led them through the main building, which seemed like a rec room of sorts and through the back where many other smaller cabins were spread. "Onto other matters. You guys can stay here. We can talk more in the morning." She showed the group a cabin that had a few beds scattered around it. It reminded Remus of a muggle summer camp, though he had never been to one. He remembered his mother wanted to send him to one, but his father was against it. Remus wasn't even allowed to go outside for days after that argument.
Once Astrid was gone, Sirius turned to Remus. "You didn't say we were meeting werewolves!" He exclaimed.
What difference does that make?" Remus asked, glowering at Sirius now.
"What diff- they're dangerous!" Sirius said. He looked almost scared.
James backed up, sensing Remus's anger, which they knew would be multiplied tenfold if it was anyone other than Sirius saying this.
"Sirius. I'm a werewolf." Remus said calmly, but the glint in his eyes was pure flame. He couldn't believe Sirius was saying this. Not after everything they've been through. The prank 5th year, which they both pretended didn't happen, but the emotions and the anger all came rushing back to Remus.
"Yes, but you're different from them." Sirius reached for Remus, who smacked his hand away.
'So there's a them now?" Remus sneered.
