Eventually, I manage to convince Sam to head back inside with me. By the time we get back indoors, we're both cold and shivering. I half drag him into the cafe where I buy us both a hot chocolate and make him sit down at a table to warm himself back up. We slowly sip our drinks and he begins to calm down a bit.
"I don't know what to do with myself," he eventually speaks. I nod.
"You won't. Not until she's back and you can be with her. But you've just got to try and push through until then. You're not alone in this. You've got me and Jack and Jimmy. We aren't going anywhere," I reassure him, reaching my hand across the table and resting it on top of his.
"You should go home, Ev. Get some sleep. You're pregnant, you need the rest," I shake my head instantly.
"No, I'll be okay. I'm not going anywhere. If I need to, I'll lay down across some of the chairs and have a nap but I'm not leaving you all right now." I insist. I don't want to leave them alone through this.
"But you need to go home if you feel tired or anything, okay?" Sam begs and I nod just to reassure him. Realistically, I doubt I'll be able to sleep until I find out that she's okay. I feel physically fine other than my emotions being all over the place. I can stay.
"Come on, let's take our drinks and go back to see Jack and Jimmy. Okay?" I say and Sam nods in agreement, standing up. I carefully do the same and we make our way back into the family room where both Jack and Jimmy sit with anxious looks on their faces. When Jack sees Sam, he rushes up to him and hugs him tightly. They hug for a while before sitting down beside eachother and Jack quietly talks to Sam. I take a seat beside Jimmy and offer him some of my drink but he shakes his head.
"Are you okay?" He asks. I nod.
"You?" He shakes his head.
"But I'll be okay," he reassures me. "Do you need anything from home? I'm going to head back and grab some bits. I'll be quick anyway," he says. I have a feeling he just wants to get away for a bit to think, I understand.
"Could you grab Summer's bag and a blanket and pillow for me, please? Maybe a change of clothes for me as well, something comfy?" I ask him and he nods.
"Alright, will do. I'll be back in a bit," I nod and kiss him as he stands up. He lets Sam and Jack know what he's doing and asks if they need anything but they're all good. Once he's gone, the room is silent again.
"I hate waiting. I just want to know what's going on," Jack breaks the silence, his leg bouncing up and down with anxiety. When I look down, I see mine is doing the same. Sam is staring blankly ahead at the wall, his face aged by his worry.
"Me too. Hopefully it won't be long now until someone updates us," I say, rubbing my eyes. I'm tired but I don't want to sleep. I'm too anxious.
"I keep thinking that maybe this isn't real. It's all just a dream or something. We'll wake up in a minute and everything will be fine, none of this would have happened," Jack is close to tears again. I nod.
"Me too. I wish it was just a horrible, awful dream. But it isn't. It isn't a dream," I sigh, drained. We stare at eachother in a depressing silence until suddenly we're startled by a knock on the door. As we look over, it opens and in walks two police officers. Jack sits up and gently nudges Sam who does the same. We all look over with fear in our eyes.
"Hello, are you Maya Grey's family?" The tallest of the two officers ask as he rests a hand on his belt. We all nod.
"We're here parents," Sam says, gesturing to himself and Jack. The offers walk inside and close the door behind them, taking a seat.
