A month later

"JIMMY! COME ON, IT'S TIME TO GO!" I call out from the doorway. Summer is stood next to me vested and clipped onto my waist harness ready to go. It's time for our twelve week scan and then our next midwife appointment and Jimmy is taking ages. He finally heads down the stairs, putting his shoes on quickly before heading out to the car.

"I'm ready, I'm ready! Let's go!" He insists. I sigh, annoyed that he might make us late.

"We're going to be late now," I tell him angrily.

"Well, you didn't set an alarm! I had to rush like mad to get ready!" He moans back. I roll my eyes.

"Maybe if you had set your own instead of relying on me to do it, you wouldn't have HAD to rush," I insist.

He raises his hands up in defeat as the car starts.

"You know best," he mutters. I stare out of the window in silence. I've been tired and snappy recently and I guess Jimmy is probably copping the brunt of it. My morning sickness is back in full swing and I can't keep food down until lunchtime so I'm running on empty currently plus my back has been aching and my POTS is getting worse. Pregnancy takes its toll on the body and I take my toll on him. I don't want to be an arse but sometimes I just snap.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have snapped. I just don't want to miss this appointment," I apologize to him as we pull into the hospital parking lot and begin searching for a disabled bay that isn't taken.

"It's okay, I'm sorry too. I should have set an alarm. We're here now and we have five minutes until the appointment. Let's head in, okay?" I nod. We find a space and park, before getting out Jimmy leans over and kisses me.

"Come on, let's do this," he says, hopping out of the car as I do the same. Goddamnit. I need to pee AGAIN.

"I need a wee," I tell him as we begin walking into the hospital.

"They'll have a toilet in the ultrasound waiting area, let's get there first, okay?" I nod, walking faster. Thankfully, he's right and I quickly rush in to pee. When I come out, he's waiting with a nurse and waves me over. We go into the room and the nurse informs me on what to do.

"So if you could just lay down on the bed there and lift up your shirt, tucking it under your bra and then take a big sheet of that tissue paper and fold that into your leggings after you pull those down to your pelvis for me that would be perfect," I nod and follow her instructions, belly out on the bed. I've definitely started getting a little bump now though it's nothing big, when I'm standing up my stomach sticks out just a little more and forms a nice tiny bump. The baby should be the size of a plum according to the app on my phone so I guess that definitely makes a sign, especially since I've got a smaller frame according to everyone else.

"This gel will feel a bit cold and you may feel a little uncomfortable as I use the Doppler on your stomach. So in this scan, we'll check the baby's size and check that they're growing well and you'll also hear the heartbeat too. Are you interested in knowing the gender if we can confirm it?" She asks us both.

"We'd like to know, please," Jimmy says. We had already agreed on this, it wouldn't make a difference anyway but it's still nice to know I guess. The nurse nods, placing the probe on my stomach and moving around. After a few minutes, the nurse speaks again.

"So size is absolutely perfect for twelve weeks as is everything else we had to check. Here you can see the legs and a hand," she points at the screen, turning it towards us and we both smile.

"And there's the head, body and feet. And if we can just get around.... ah, there we go! I'll turn the sound on," she clicks another button and suddenly the room is filled with a loud pulsing sound, our baby's heartbeat. I squeal excitedly.
