After what seems like forever, there's a knock on the door. We're all silently crying and don't say anything as a doctor walks in and sits down on a chair across from us.

"How is she?" I ask, my voice hoarse from crying.

"She's stable. When she was hit by the car, she sustained a lot of injuries. She had a hemothorax on her right lung, a pooling of blood. We put in a chest tube to drain that. She also had a weak pulse but we've managed to get that to a more stable condition. She has a broken ankle that has been pretty badly crushed as well however her leg is still circulating blood well so though it will need an operation to fix it, it will heal with time. She's also got a broken right arm which is a clean break through her radius. That will need setting and to be put in a cast. She also does have some broken ribs which is nothing too serious however that may have caused the hemothorax. We had to call neurology in to check that she didn't have any injuries to her brain however so far, so good. We're going to do an MRI scan of her brain and a CT of her body to check for any internal injuries. We suspect there may be some internal bleeding in her stomach, however, which is a cause for concern. The plan is to get that addressed and treated as soon as possible if that is the case. Currently, she is stable however that could change. We just have to hope for the best and we're going to do everything we can to treat her. We've currently got her sedated and on pain medication to let her body rest and she may look a little scary with all of the equipment on her since there's a tube in her chest, masks on her face, a neck brace, splints on her leg and arm and a lot of wires and some IVs including blood we had to give to her from what she lost due to her leg injury however you can go and see her as soon as she's back from her scans. How does that sound?" We all sit in silence, shocked as he relays all of her injuries back to us.

"What about the person who hit her? Well where the hell is he?!" Sam shouts, sitting up with fury in his eyes. The doctor gently places his hands out, motioning to calm down.

"He's with the police now being taken care of and questioned. We've also got an officer in the bay with your daughter due to the nature of the incident. Right now we are focussed on taking care of your daughter and making sure that she is okay. She's only fifteen, this is a lot of trauma for her body to take and we need to focus on helping her stay stable and get better." Sam sighs, rubbing his hands on his forehead.

"Okay. Okay, let's go see her," he says, standing up. We all follow suit however he doctor shakes his head.

"Only two of you can go at a time and only family are allowed. Are you two family?" The doctor asks. I sit back down.

"They're family. They are like siblings, we took them in when they were younger and Maya grew up with them," Jack states firmly, resting a hand on my shoulder. Sam nods in agreement. The doctor thinks for a moment before nodding.

"If anyone else asks, just say that you're her siblings. Okay?" He nods at us both. We nod back in agreement.

"We'll come back and send you in a little bit," Jack says, gently wrapping his arm around Sam's waist before both of them follow the doctor back out onto the resus unit. As soon as they leave the room, Jimmy breaks down in tears again.

"What the fuck, how the fuck can this happen?" He sobs. I wrap my arms around him and he lays across my chest, defeated.

"I don't know. I don't know," I whisper, gently brushing through his hair with my fingers.

"She has to be okay," I say to him, firmly. He nods.

"She will. She's strong, she's so strong," he says back. I nod, resting one of my hands lightly on my stomach and rubbing it gently.

"It'll be okay," I say quietly again. After a while, Jimmy stops crying and somehow manages to fall asleep in my arms. I don't sleep. I couldn't even think of it right now, my mind is on overdrive. Instead I just sit and hold Jimmy, thinking about everything. My thoughts vary from sadness over what's happened to disbelief on how this could have happened to pity for Sam and Jack and to anger for the person who hit her.
