I stared at him, my mind not working.
Did I hear it right?
Eh...keeping all things aside, did he say it right!?
I waited a few seconds, assuming he would correct himself.
And he was about to.
"I---"
But his voice cut off before he could say anything more.
The closet door refusing to open all this while, flung open.
Smith greeted us both with meek glances.
"Sorry to bother you both like that for the kit. The door got stuck. I had to get a stick from the beach."
Though he was talking to us, his eyes blinked rapidly and he could barely stand still without holding himself back from falling.
Donnor came to his rescue, getting him around his shoulders.
I closed the walk-in closet, switching off the flickering lights. My eyes went to the racks and floor one last time before I caught up with Smith and Donnor, heading downstairs back to the couch.
"You could have laid him down in the bedroom."
I suggested as Donnor made him lay on the couch, propping his legs up on a giant cushion.
But my mind was still stuck on the question Donnor had asked. I refused to believe it.
Had he seriously asked that? No that's not possible. It can't be possible. It's not even remotely a possibility.
But what did I hear then?
"Callie!"
Smith's voice interrupted my train of thought, signalling me to come near him. I nodded, standing beside him.
"Hope you are feeling better, Smith."
He stretched his arms and legs, signalling Donnor to stand beside me.
What was going on?
Donnor did as told. Smith glanced at us both, his tiry eyes sticking to Donnor in a glimmer.
He whispered, making us both lean closer to hear him speak.
"Don?"
"Yes?"
"Did you ask Callie to be your girlfriend yet?"
I jumped, my eyes sprinting from Smith to Donnor. I gulped, rubbing my ears.
"Am...am...I heard it correctly?"
Smith faced me, nodding.
"Yes, Callie. Don't worry. He is your friend. How hard can it be?"
I stepped back, my chest squeezing my heart out.
My breath grew unsteady, my palms sweaty.
Be Donnor's girlfriend?
BE DONNOR'S GIRLFRIEND!?
I shouted in a scream, making them both cover their ears.
"BE HIS GIRLFRIEND!? are you crazy Smith!? Why? What did I do to deserve this? Just why!?"
Smith's face shrivelled in a shell, waiting for me to calm down. Donnor stood there like a statue, glancing around with his hands in his pocket.
It wasn't like me to scream and have a meltdown, I have handled worse police cases in my life. But this, right now, was much worse than any case file.
