I stared at him in a state of shock. He, on the other hand, appeared calm with a showing of no heart.
When did he change his mind? How?
I held my hands together, tapping my feet. He stood in silence, waiting for me to get changed with folded arms.
I passed him a short smile, grabbing the robe from the bed, my hands shaking.
And he noticed it like lightwork.
"Eh...looks like it is really your first day at the barn, Miss Hue. Hands already shaky, that's a disappointment."
My breath picked up. His words were like daggers ripping through my skin. I spun around, flashing him a wide smile.
"Oh no, it's all good here..Mr...?"
"Mr James."
"Ah...right...Mr James."
"Then change. What are you waiting for?"
I nodded, plastering a forced smile on my face. I glanced at the door, then back at the robe, my stomach squeezing in a ball.
I glanced around the room I hadn't noticed until now. Rose-covered twin-sized bed, neon lights hung around the wall with mini bedside table lamps...
Jesus...what have I gotten myself into...
I walked to the door, glancing at the peephole. All I could see was an empty hallway.
"I get it's your first day here, but quit stalling."
I passed him a quick smile, holding the robe closer to my chest.
"I think I can get Andrea for you now. See ya."
I opened the doorknob, but he held my arm, pulling me back.
"You are not going anywhere now. I want you here."
Shivers ran down my spine. All the energy spent earlier arguing with him had vanished.
"Uh..can you turn around.. I--just turn around."
His eyebrows raised, the sharpness of his jaw and eyes taunting me to say it out loud.
No. Don't cry. Don't cry.
"Hurry up."
My clothes dropped on the floor. I stood in my underwear, tears boiling in my eyes. I breathed, pulling on the silky robe, the softness of it itching my bare skin.
I rubbed my face, drawing in a long breath.
"You can turn around now."
He did as said, his eyes meeting mine instead of going down my body. I blinked, hoping he wouldn't see the trail of tears. I stepped forward, my exposed thighs up my knees not doing any favor either.
"Here."
My throat grew heavy. I couldn't get the words out, that were on the tip of my tongue. I sucked in the saliva, giving it another try, pushing aside the heaviness in my chest.
"Here. I mean. Do whatever you want."
His lips tightened at the last bit of my words. Something flashed in his brutal eyes, but I couldn't pinpoint it.
What was it? Forgiveness?
Hope that was not it. Or maybe that was it. All these flashes in his eyes I notice every time we talk. That has to be it.
He stepped closer, making me step back. I rubbed my eyes, my heart pacing.
Before I knew it, we ended up in that same gap between the bed and the bedside table. My eyes flew around, the heaviness in my chest getting all fluttery. The pacing in my heart turned into a drum, vibrating through my skin.
