He steadied me up, inquiring if I was fine in a clean, soft voice, the one which always shows a rather gentle side of him.
And i fumbled to find the right words, staring at his neatly ironed coat.
"I am....fine! Fine...thanks..."
I blinked down at my officer uniform, pretending to straighten it up in order to buy some time.
My mind was on radioactive mode. It was working overtime. I had so many questions, so many thoughts, but it didn't reach my lips. It stopped right inside my chest, getting me all worked up and anxious.
I could feel his eyes on me, studying my reaction to all the balloons, chocolates, everything.
I was too flustered to look up at him, but I knew I needed to break the growing tension before it makes me fall headfirst on the street.
"So... what's happening? Any... special occasion..."
I glanced at all the balloons and chocolates in wrinkling confusion, even though on the inside I was freaking out.
There was no way all this wasn't for me.
He laughed, making me feel even more embarrassed than i already did for pretending. I folded my arms, drawing my lips in a seal.
"Ah....looks like someone bought a whole street."
He lowered his voice, stepping closer across my ears, letting the honey warmth sink down my body in a bath.
I stood still, thoughts bouncing up and down as my lips rolled off, reacting to his laid down tone, him standing so damn close to me.
I coughed, to which I noticed his lips curling into a sly smile.
"What!?" I punched his coat playfully, raising my eyebrows. It was hard to not resist the urge to smile.
"Your coughing." He pointed out, his smile fading into a smirk.
I bit my lip, looking away.
"What about my cough?"
"You are trying to look all normal, but I know you are freaking out."
His words ripped my soul apart right then and there. I hated how he was so casually right.
I held my waist, meeting his ice cold eyes. I leaned in his ears in a tip toe, whispering,
"You tell me, what's that box all about?"
His shoulders grew tense as my words rolled off in the air, my eyes lingering on his emotionless face.
His jaw flashed in a movement, making me smile. I poked his chest as gently as his whisper, the same intensity,
"You are trying to look all normal, but I know you are freaking out."
He coughed, making me flush in a fit of giggles while his eyes remained on my face in a smile so bright, it raised his cheekbones above the clouds.
"You are coughing too! Stop making fun of me!"
I made a face, glancing at him with my puppy eyes in a pout.
He glanced down for a split second, giving me an illusion that he was perhaps nervous but that moment went as soon as it came.
He held up the box high up in air, the red velvety skin shimmering under the grimace of the streetlights.
Like it always does, the air turned cold and crisp, sending shivers down my spine. I couldn't describe this rush of adrenaline pouring inside me, but it felt nice, like I was drifting through heaven, fading away with the wind to a land of my dreams.
