This Was War

I screamed as Gio pulled the trigger.

The whole world around me stood still, as if time had stopped within a flick of a finger.

One action. Wrong choice. And it's all over.

I closed my eyes, darkness curtaining my senses when a grab made me leap to the side, throwing me on the ground.

My eyes snapped open, a realisation that I was still alive.

The bullet didn't hit me.

But a sinking feeling crippled through my arms as i swung my head around, noticing officer Kay lying still on the ground.

In another snap of the eyes, horror creeped through my body as Gio kept shooting like a maniac to a hoard of guards coming his way.

This was war.

And the way to end it was to get Gio run over that portion, then it would be all over.

I stood up, my eyes drawing on Don who came running for officer Kay, shaking his shoulders.

My heart rate accelerated and body froze. He stood dangerously close to the portion himself.

"Don!" I yelled, my voice bursting through the sound of gun shots,

"Stay right there! Don't move!"

He turned around, his ice cold eyes meeting mine in distress. He blinked, signalling he didn't hear anything I said just now.

My palms grew sweaty. And it wasn't because of the weather or the fact that Gio was still wandering out killing people in the open, but where Don was.

I signalled him to stay right there, to which much to my relief, he nodded. I came running to him from the other side, dodging from gun shots being thrown in a fish market.

I knelt beside him, holding his hand in a hush.

"Come on, let's go from here."

He stared at me, confused.

"But Kay--"

I breathed, cutting him off,

"Don, we can't stay here. It's dangerous." I pointed at his back, my heart racing.

"There is a trap hole right there. The moment you fall in there, you can't get back up."

Silence fell between us as soon as I warned him. His icy eyes turned somewhat soft, acknowledging my concern.

"Okay." He whispered as I held his arm, getting him away, leaving Officer Kay behind.

The location was an open field, so there was no concrete place to hide. We stood to the left side - the side with not a lot going on, that was comparatively less gun shots.

The place was a mess. Officers were running around, some calling backup while others running for their lives.

"What should we do?" I asked Don who stood behind me, glaring at Gio's ruthless face.

"We need to execute the plan."

"But Don--"

"Someone has to do it, Callie."

He nodded at me, shushing me down with his index finger. Goosebumps ran down my skin like wildfire.

My chest ached. I wanted to reach out my hands and stop him, but he felt too far away. Even though he stood right beside me.

He was right here.

I looked him in the eye, the tall man with sharp features, icy eyes and square cut jaw.
