Before I could connect the dots, or connect anything at all, officers surrounded me, grabbing my hand. I protested in a state of panic, fanning my arms and legs up and down.
"Stop! You all are misunderstanding--"
"Misunderstanding, what misunderstanding?"
The officer with the long beard closed in, his void black eyes darkening.
I held my breath.
"Misunderstanding in your thinking that I am involved with Donnor in feeding information...! I am not! Donnor had the file and photograph in his warehouse way before! I didn't bring them there!"
He stroked his beard, raising his eyebrows in amusement.
"Cool story, Callie. Now where was the file and photograph before this?"
I racked my brain, trying to remember.
Oh shit! I was supposed to go to Ireland....it was in my bag...then I got kidnapped by Donnor's men--
"Enough! You don't have an answer, don't you?"
My eyes flashed to him, but no words came out. My fists clenched. The bearded officer laughed, gesturing to the officer with his hands.
The other officers stepped forward, locking my wrists with handcuffs.
And just like that, my heart shattered into bits.
The weirdest thing was, I couldn't even tell why.
Why am I feeling heartbroken? I expected all this way before. Back when Donnor made a pity excuse that he wanted me as a "cover." Back when he married me. Back when he wanted me in all his missions.
He wanted to know about the Ireland case.
But why?
My heart paced and chest tightened as I got dragged in the sand, to a big black jeep awaiting my arrival.
I had so many questions. But so few answers.
Officers sat next to me, grappling my hands. Jeep took off, making its way through the narrow pebbled pathway in the forest.
Cold air brushed through my hair, sending shivers down my spine. My thoughts steamed up the surface yet again.
That bastard. He was blaming me for betraying him at the restaurant. He has been the one playing both sides of the fence all this long! And for what? That stupid Ireland case file!?
Waves of cold air halted as the jeep screeched to a halt. The officers shoved me out, dragging me to the police station. Hawaiians gathered around, some with a phone in their hands, recording the drama.
"Leave me! Leave me alone!"
I shouted and screamed, but nothing made a difference. They threw me on the chair, tying me down with a thick braided rope.
I flung my arms up and down, kicking my legs. The bearded officer sat opposite me, clicking his finger. A guard rushed in with a tray of two glasses of water, keeping them on the shining wooden table.
He banged the table, making my arms and legs halt. I looked him in the eye, trying to find some sympathy. Anything. But there was none except a void, determined to get me inside the cell.
He pulled out a few papers, keeping the case file and photograph right in front of my view.
"Now you have to tell us the truth, Callie. There is no other way around this."
My breath paced.
"It's for your benefit. Think about your family."
My fists clenched, legs pressing the floor in anger. He continued.
