Being a leader was not for the weak of heart, Hongjoong could say that with confidence now. When they first debuted and one of the kids messed up, Hongjoong had taken the blame for it. He could not allow his members to be hurt, especially for the more sensitive and young ones. It would have broken his heart to see them in pain. But he didn't realize that he had been doing them all a disservice by taking the blame. Hongjoong had been preventing his members from necessary lessons and growth. What was even worse was that no one in the group knew what he had been doing. They all just thought that the staff never found out about what they had done when in reality, the staff were going to Hongjoong about what they had found out and the captain was taking the fall for every single thing. It did give him a reputation as a troublemaker but it was better than the alternative.
"We're all going to be in trouble!" Wooyoung sobbed.
"NO! We're not" Hongjoong shook his head. He was not going to let that happen. This was his fault and he was going to own up to it.
"Hyung! The manager is going to cane us!" Jongho argued. Mingi began to hyperventilate and Seongwha rushed to his side, calming the younger in a matter of moments. Mingi clung to the oldest like he was a lifeline sent to save Mingi from a raging sea.
"Shut up Jongho!" San snapped. Seongwha quietly scolded him, trying to manage all the members while Hongjoong was lost in his head, thinking.
"No one says anything about this. I am the one who did this, understand?" Hongjoong decided. There was no other alternative, he was used to this.
"Hyung! You can't do that, we all made this mistake. It's not fair for you to take all the blame" Yeosang shook his head.
"Shut up! Just do it, okay Yeosang? Not a word out of any of you when the manager comes in here" Hongjoong snapped. Yeosang retreated to the other side of the room, not saying anything for the rest of the day.
"Hongjoong, are you sure? Yeosang is right. We should face this together" Seongwha left the kids behind, walking over to Hongjoong.
"Just keep them out of the way" Hongjoong nodded. Seongwha bit his lip but said nothing. It was clear he didn't agree and yet Hongjoong was his leader and Seongwha had to keep quiet. They were still early enough in their debut that they didn't know each other well and whatever Hongjoong said to do was done.
When their manager and staff members walked in, Hongjoong stood in front of them, protecting his other members. He could see that some of them were quite anxious about lying to their staff but he didn't care. Hongjoong needed them to do this just once. He was not going to let them get in trouble. When they got home, Seongwha dragged Hongjoong into their room.
"I've had enough. You cannot keep doing this" Seongwha stated.
"What are you talking about?" Hongjoong knew exactly what Seongwha was talking about.
"I get it, you want to protect the members but you are hurting them. Do you have any idea how we felt watching you take a punishment that we all deserved? The kids feel guilty, and honestly I do too. You need to stop taking the blame for them. It's never going to help anything" Seongwha explained. Hongjoong shook his head, he couldn't do that.
"This isn't up for debate, Hongjoong. The next time you try to take the blame for something one of us did, I'm telling the truth to the staff" Seongwha threatened. He didn't want to but this was going too far. It was not only affecting Hongjoong but it was affecting the others too.
"I don't want to see them hurt" Hongjoong insisted.
"Too bad. Cause their already hurt, not physically but emotionally. And you did that to them" Seongwha didn't mean for that to sound so rude but it was true. Hongjoong flinched, not expecting that. Seongwha was right though and deep down, the captain knew it. he didn't like t but the next time that Wooyoung cursed at the staff, in a fit of anger and exhaustion, Hongjoong watched with a heavy heart as his dongsaeng was taken out of the room to be dealt with.
"Your not going to help him this time?" Yeosang was kind of surprised. They had all gotten used to relying on Hongjoong.
"No. Not this time, nor any other time" Hongjoong shook his head. Yeosang backed off, a little scared at the sudden change in the leader. None of them had any idea where this new determination and idea had come from and they weren't sure if they liked it.
