Mai Grephin POV

"There, now you're perfect, mistress" the head maid stated as they finally finished dressing me up

I checked myself in the giant mirror in front of me, they did a flawless job, although I guess it's to be expected since it took a good three hours to get ready, my black hair was tied in bun while my lashes had been enhanced with a ton of mascara, and my complexion was corrected with foundation while a thin layer of red lipstick had been applied on my lips, the dress I picked after a two week long search was even more beautiful than when I tried it on

(A.N. sorry but I really don't know how to describe wedding dresses)

*Knock knock*

Someone knocked on the door and I gestured at one of the maids to open the door, mom walked in, for once she had abandoned her usual provocative dresses opting instead for a traditional elven robe

"You're gorgeous and I bet ten gold coins a certain someone won't be able to get his eyes off you" she said

"Well that's why I was willing to spend three hours dressing up" I replied as the maids all left the changing room giving us a bit of privacy

"Yes, you truly are stunning... I just wish your father could see you" she whispered so faintly I almost missed it

"What?"

She immediately noticed her slip of the tongue and pressed a hand over her mouth

"Ehm, if you don't want to you don't have to tell me, I don't really need to know" I told her, she made a guilty expression at my remark

"You've always been considerate about this"

"Well I kinda noticed it's a touchy subject and honestly I never met my father so well it might sound cold but I don't really care, you've always made sure I had everything I needed and I know you did your best to raise me, that's enough"

"Yeah, you never asked and so I never talked about it, truly a pathetic excuse for not telling you about your father" she stated with a self-deprecating tone

"If you don't feel like it..."

"No, you have the right to know and it's time I stop running away from those memories"

"Okay, let's have a chat then, we still have time before the ceremony" I said and mom sat down beside me

"Alright, where do I start?" she wondered

"The beginning? Like his name? How did you two meet?" I suggested

"Right, of course , well his name was Finrael, he was one of the many children orphaned due to the human-elf war, we met when we entered the training program for the royal guards" mom started talking, her eyes glistening

"He was the very first commoner to ever join after elder Virion allowed commoners to join the royal guard, he was extremely talented, honestly he was stronger than me at the time and if not for his humble background and the power of house Grephin he would have been the one chosen as a Lance instead of me, we started talking during the training, differently from the other guys he never tried to curry my favor, he just enjoyed my company and I enjoyed his, by the time we graduated and officially became royal guards we had started a clandestine relationship and to me that was enough but he, being the righteous idiot he was, wanted to do things properly, he went to my parents to ask my hand in marriage" she continued and her voice started to crack
