Trust was always a funny thing. You spent all your time getting to know someone, opening your heart, your thoughts, and after you get to a certain point in your relationship, you finally start to let them in. Allowing them to know your secrets, your wants, your dreams. How things made you feel, even if it was something as small as what your favorite thing to eat was or going as far as telling them something that could potentially ruin everything. But that's what a friendship is all about right? Learning to find out if that person was really along for the long haul or if their loyalty to you was real.
I looked into Garreth's eyes hoping he was that person to me. He had been with me through some crazy times. But just like any type of friendship, they have a way of constantly pissing you off.
"HAHAHHAHAHHA!!!!" Garreth laughed obnoxiously, growing his head back in his chair. Pounding his hand on the table, causing it to shake as he carried on with his laughing. Eyes around the pub looked at us as he was clearly making a scene.
Anne shook her head in disbelief. Annoyed with his outburst especially when I wasn't kidding around.
I pounded my arm on the table. Causing him to abruptly stop as I glared at him as harshly as I could.
"Damn it Garreth! Shut up! The whole place doesn't want to hear your loudmouth!" I said annoyed.
"Oh come on Alora, even from you that sounds absolutely ridiculous." He said, smiling bright as he took another swig of his coffee.
"Want me to take you outside behind the alley and see if you believe me then?" I asked.
He laughed, leaning in closer to the table, "You know you're not very convincing."
I groaned, "Oh Weasley, say one more thing to tick me off and I'll show you convincing!" I said gritting my teeth.
Anne grabbed my arm, squeezing it lightly. Her eyes flickering between mine as she looked around the pub. There were occasional eyes watching us from my outburst, including Garreth's.
I closed my eyes, pinching them shut. Trying to focus on my breathing to get my heart rate down. He was really getting to me even when I was just trying to be honest and have him understand the seriousness of the situation.
"Garreth........." Anne said softly, releasing my arm as her hands wrapped around her cup. "She's not exaggerating..."
He looked confused as he finally came down from his moment of laughter, watching her eyes as she tried fighting some tears.
He reached out with his pinky finger towards me with a smile on his face. "I pinky swear I won't say anything.... alright?"
I sighed, "You expect me to trust you with a pinky swear?"
"Well, what do you expect me to do an unbreakable vow with you-"
"Wouldn't be actually a bad idea-"
"Alora." Anne chimed in, giving me the "stop screwing around" look.
I huffed out the breath I had been holding, hoping I wasn't going to regret this.
I reached my hand out, swirling my right pinky finger with his in defeat.
"Fine, but I'm trusting you Garreth. You understand?"
He rolled his eyes at me, pulling his finger away as his hands went back to his cup.
"Yes, yes I understand. Now tell me, what's the deal." He said.
I turned back to Anne, asking for one last approval that this was what she wanted.
She nodded back to me as she breathed deeply, feeling the nervousness surround the table.
"Fine..........." I said, breathing deeply before letting it out slowly. "Sebastian.......... he's been taken to Azkaban on false charges of the murder of his uncle."
Garreth's face went almost immediately white as he looked in between the two of us. Waiting for us to tell him we were kidding but the seriousness we left at the table gave him his answer.
Anne gave me a look. I didn't want him to know the full story. I didn't want his reputation of Sebastian to be crushed. I knew a white lie wouldn't hurt the situation as long as he knew we weren't kidding around.
"Please tell me your joking..."
"I'm not... I'm afraid." I breathed in deeply, clutching onto the handle of my cup. "Someone has betrayed us, and I need to figure out who.... and why."
"Fucking hell." He said under his breath, his eyes following to the outside where it still continued to pour.
"Garreth.... I need to get inside the ministry to figure out who gave them the false information..... and potentially when his trial is going to be so I can combat the evidence so he can be released."
He breathed heavily, facing me again as his eyes darkened with worry.
"You know, you yourself could get in a load of trouble for this Alora. Messing with the ministry and trying to sneak in for this type of information is a one-way ticket to Azkaban-"
"Look I know the risk, okay? I know what I'm asking is outrageous but...... I can't let him stay there Garreth. I can't imagine what he's dealing with right now and I have to figure out a way........ Please. Help me to help him..."
His rubbed his face in agony, seeing the nervousness and dread clearly as he battled himself on the choices.
"Please Garreth, I at least need to know when his trial is going to be so I can be there to support him." Anne said quietly.
Garreth sighed, looking into the bottomless pit of his cup "Fine.......... Look I'll get you in but whatever happens after, I cannot be involved in."
"I understand." I said.
"We'll leave once this rain dies down some, it's not an easy walk from here so I hope your prepared."
"Thank you Garreth....... I mean it."
"Don't thank me yet Alora, for all I know........ I'm taking you into a snake pit."
I sighed, my eyes reaching back outside as I looked up into the gloomy sky. "Yeah well......... the snake pit is all I've only really known anyway......."
