Flashback to London, 2019
The two days of the wait were agonizing. Ayaan did send a cleared version but it wasn't it. I asked him to clear it more and he did.
I thanked Ayaan once he sent the clear picture. Didn't push him with the details part. I wasn't ready yet to let my friends know anything. Hell, I haven't told Kunal a thing. He's my best friend, my confidante. I decided that once I put my men to dig for details I'll message Kunal.
Interesting, how can a place become special just because of one person?
Flashback end.
"You better take me to this dreamland of yours. I'm so eager to come along." Guru's voice brought me out of my thoughts.
"It's no dreamland. Just old memories." I say.
"Is it? You never zoned out before. What's so special about these memories?" Guru is one hell of an interrogator. Comes with the title of being the best of his cult.
"You haven't answered my question!"
"Which question?"
"Great! Now you are forgetting stuff! The one where I asked 'How long back?' From how long did you know her?" He repeated his question.
"Well... you better sit properly."
He adjusted himself in his seat.
"It is from when I was in London back in 2019..."
"WHAT!? And you are telling me now?"
"Don't overreact. I got the blurred picture in 2019. By the time I got the file I gave you, it was 2021. Covid being a major stop in the process."
"And who gave you this file?"
"Sky. He worked very hard. Ayaan's work wasn't enough to give an apparent view. And by that time she had also shifted from the UK back here. So, Sky had to do a lot of work."
Flashback to Bangalore, 2021
"Sir, here's all the details we could get," Sky, the man I put on duty said forwarding a file.
"Thank you! You may leave now. The payment has already been sent. I'll reach out if anything is needed." I said, controlling the urge to rip open the cover and read all the details collected.
Sky nodded in response.
"Sir, don't mind me asking. How important was this file? You've never given such little detail and the picture was not of much use."
"She is, was, and will be very important to me. You better keep this in mind." Sky was a bit shocked by my confession.
"I hope you haven't told anyone about this."
"No sir. I haven't told a soul. Not even Guru sir."
"Thank you once again."
"You're welcome, sir. I'll take your leave."
With that Sky exited my cabin.
Once Sky was out of sight, I rang the bell for the office boy. Once he came in, I instructed him not to let anyone in my cabin for the next hour. If they say it's urgent, I told him to call me. At any cost, no one was to enter and see me engulfed in this file.
Flashback end.
"So, that was what the kid was busy with. He didn't utter a word to me."
"Yeah! That's called professionalism."
"Fine! Now give me the details."
"What do you mean by details? You've been following her. You are the one with better knowledge and details about her."
"I didn't mean current details. The actual ones. And you know what I mean."
I sucked in a deep breath.
"You know when and where I saw her..."
Guru crossed his arms, indicating I go into detail about everything. Well here goes nothing.
"I was on this stupid blind date instead of Dhruv cuz the bastard was busy. I got stood up, paid the bill and walked towards Tower Bridge ferry station. That's when I saw her. I was so lost on seeing her, that I forgot to approach her or to take a picture. By the time I took out my phone, she was almost on the ferry. I only managed to take this picture..."
I showed the picture taken, the original one.
"Ayaan's done an amazing job. This picture is so bad."
"Yeah, I know. But I'm happy I managed to get this. Once Ayaan cleared the picture and did his tech thing. I got my own hands dirty and made an open file on her. That's when I asked you who's your best junior."
"And Sky was my answer." He interrupted.
"Yes! I wanted a junior to handle the file. Didn't want big names on the file. Initially, I was behind Sky like a hawk. Once I was convinced with his work I let him do his magic. I then came to you to keep an eye on her."
"So, this Amrutha girl is..."
"YES! She is the one. Now tell me what's more about her you gotta tell."
"She's off to Mangalore for her friend's wedding. She's taking a bus to and fro. I thought I'd ask one of my men in Mangalore to keep an eye for me."
"Why aren't you going?"
"My wife needs me here." He stated.
"Ok then, I hope your men are reliable."
"Yes, they are. They are true to their word."
"Good. When is she going? How long is she going to stay there?"
"She leaves in two days. It is a two-day function. Reception in the evening and marriage next morning. Nothing different."
"Fine! I'll go to Mangalore. But don't let your men know it."
"As you wish." He responded. Guru knew when it comes to family nothing is changing my decision.
