Flashback to 2010 continues...

We stood in front of a small house. Appa knocked on the door a few times and we waited. No response. Appa knocked again. Still no response.

"Appa I'll knock this time," I said just as he was about to knock. Appa signalled a go-ahead and I knocked. As loud as I could.

This time someone opened the door. A man in his late 50s, with a reseeding hairline and big spectacles.

"Yaar neevu? Yen beku?" He asked blocking our view of the inside.

(Who are you? What do you want?)

"Naanu Harish Gowda! Idu nanna maga." Appa introduced us to the old man.

(I'm Harish Gowda! This is my son.)

"Oh! Aa hudugi na hudkond bandideera?" The old man asked.

(Oh! You've come in search of the girl?)

"Yes!" Appa answered with hope.

"Banni hogona." Saying so the old man came out of the house and started walking on the road.

(Come let's go.)

"Yell hogtidivi?" I asked confused. Wasn't she supposed to be in the house? It is late in the night.

(Where are we going?)

"Just follow him," Appa whispered to me.

The old man stopped in front of a small heap of mud. That's what I thought initially. Only later to find out it was a grave.

"Here she is. The girl!" The old man said pointing at the grave.

"Yen idella?" Appa was angry. I could sense it in his tone.

(What is all this?)

"You wanted to see the girl. Here she is." The old man said with a shrug of his shoulder. After a few seconds, realisation dawned on him. "I'm sorry if you were given the lead of her being alive. She died a couple of months ago. A very tragic incident."

Just as the old man completed his sentence, Appa fell to his knees and howled out a cry. This was the first time I'd seen Appa cry so loudly. I was too stunned to react. My sister was no more, that was a lot to take in.

"Aiyyo magale! I'm sorry! If only I came to see you early, I guess I could have saved you!" Appa wept and all I could do was walk toward him and steady his shaking shoulders.

Flashback end

The ringing of my phone brought me back to reality. This time the reality was better than that horrid flashback. Even though it was a false lead, it had messed us up badly. For days, sorry not days but months Appa was behaving like a zombie. No emotions, no activity just the mundane work.
