Alexander's P.O.V
It seemed like Alpha Maverick had recognized me. He let me go and uttered, "What happened, Alex? Why do you smell like Cain? I thought you guys weren't friends." I fixed my collar and said, "Cain got a nosebleed during the party. It looked serious, so I brought him here. Dr. Amal took him to the treatment room. I have to go home now. I hope everything goes well. Bye." A bouquet of roses was lying next to the alpha's feet. Maverick probably wanted to surprise his mate. He lost his mind when he smelled Cain's scent.
I gathered the roses and handed them to the alpha. Maverick sighed and stated, "Thank you for looking after my brother, Alex." I nodded and walked away. I was in dire need of a shower. I walked to the closest bus stop and called a cab. A limousine drove by at full speed. Cain's parents had arrived. I almost fell asleep while waiting for the taxi. My mother was in the kitchen when I got home. She gasped when she saw the blood stains. I put my hands up and stated, "Don't panic, Mom. The blood is not mine." My mother didn't believe me. She examined my chest and said, "Tell me what happened." I explained things to my mother and took a shower.
My phone rang when I was about to turn off the light. Arthur was calling me. I didn't want the guy to disturb me, so I answered my phone. I groaned when Arthur asked, "With whom did you spend the night, Alex? The guys saw you leaving the party in a sportscar." I was angry but didn't reveal it. I took a deep breath and replied, "It's none of your concern, Arthur. I'm going to bed. Don't call me again." I turned off my phone and threw it on the bed.
I woke up early the next day and went to work. It hadn't rained in a while. We had to visit several locations to check the growth of our plants. I was exhausted by the end of the day. My father summoned me to his office after dinner. He leaned back in his chair and declared, "Your mother and I have decided to sell our businesses." I rubbed my face and asked, "Why, Dad? Everything is going well." My father clenched his fists and stated, "We can't burden you any longer, Alex. I might need surgery. I'll be out of commission for months if that happens. I can't ask you to handle the business for so long. It will take time to find a buyer, so relax. We will move to another state after your graduation. You won't have to worry about Arthur then."
I couldn't believe my ears. I thought I would grow old in L.A. My father was in pain. I didn't want to worsen it, so I didn't argue further. Everyone was talking about Cain on Monday. It looked like the guy was still in the hospital. Clifford approached me before class started. The guy glared at me and said, "Cain wants to see you." I couldn't understand why the guy was interested in me, so I asked, "Why?" Clifford got irritated. He huffed and replied, "How would I know? Don't try to fool me. Emily told me how you pushed her aside to seize the opportunity. Are you trying to get in his good books? Dream on, buddy. Cain doesn't like clowns like you."
I sighed and asked, "And you believed what Emily said?" Clifford nodded and replied, "Of course. She's from the pack. Why would she lie?" I grabbed Clifford's shoulder and said, "Good for you, man, and tell your friend I don't have time to visit him." My father received a message from Dr. Amal on Wednesday. He was finally free to perform surgery on my father. I drove my parents to the hospital the next day. The doctor had already talked to us about the procedure. I had just finished filling out the paperwork when I ran into Dr. Amal. The guy smiled and asked, "Did everything go smoothly, Alex?" As if the doctor didn't already know. I chuckled and replied, "Yes, sir. Thanks to you, I didn't have to do much."
Dr. Amal grabbed my father's file and said, "Great. You can visit Cain while you are here. He's in private room 103. Don't worry about your parents. They are in good hands." I was too stunned to speak. Dr. Amal laughed and stated, "Go. Ruel is also there. He will be happy to see you." Dr. Amal dragged me to the elevator and yelled, "Have fun!" I suddenly felt nervous. Cain and I had nothing in common. What would we even talk about? I groaned while getting out of the elevator. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Cain's mother opened the door. She smiled and stated, "It's good to see you, Alex. Cain's sleeping right now. He will wake up soon. He wanted to see you for so long. Can you watch Ruel while I grab us something to drink and eat?"
I smiled and uttered, "Of course, ma'am. Take your time." Ruel was playing with toys in the family area. He squealed when he saw me. I ruffled the little boy's hair and said, "You are as cute as ever, Ruel." Ruel hugged me tightly and yelled, "I missed you so much, Uncle Alex!" I kissed Ruel's cheek and replied, "I missed you too, munchkin. Let's be quiet. Your uncle is still sleeping, right?" Ruel nodded cutely. I played games with Ruel. Cain's mother hadn't returned yet, and it was getting late. I suddenly heard Cain say, "Water." I quickly poured water into a cup and grabbed a straw. Cain had his eyes closed. I helped him up and uttered, "Here. Drink as much as you want."
Cain opened his eyes when he heard my voice. He looked in shock at me. Cain grabbed my hand and uttered, "You are finally here." I froze when he hugged my middle. Cain was acting like we were long-lost lovers. Cain wouldn't let me go, no matter how many times I pushed him. I stood there till his mother showed up. The woman stroked her son's head and declared, "He can't breathe, son." Cain gazed into my eyes. I was startled when his eye color changed. Cain's mother smiled and said, "Tell him you will come see him again, or he won't let you go." Something suddenly came over me. I leaned my forehead against Cain's and uttered, "See you tomorrow, Cain." Cain closed his eyes and fell asleep. Cain's mother patted my back and stated, "You did good, son. Thank you." I quickly walked out of the room. Clifford's words echoed my mind.
It was best to stay away from Cain. I already had a bad reputation. Cain didn't need to suffer because of me. I went to see my father. He had already settled in. I drove my mother home after visiting hours. My father underwent surgery the next day. He was allowed to go home after a week. No one bothered me after the incident. I was glad about it. Imagine my surprise when I saw Cain waiting by my car on Friday. The guy smiled broadly and said, "I hope I'm not disturbing you, Alex." I could feel all the eyes on me. I scanned our surroundings and asked Cain, "What are you doing here?" Cain grabbed my hand and replied, "I would like to introduce myself to you formally." I frowned and stated, "It's okay. We already know each other. Can you move now? I need to go home."
Cain pulled me into his arms and asked, "What's the hurry, Alex? Let's have dinner together. See it as me paying you back for your help." I knew where this was going. I pushed Cain and said, "Don't embarrass me. You have a lot of admirers. Why don't you ask one of them out for dinner?" I stepped into my car and drove away. I had suffered enough. I never wanted to be treated like a fool again.
Thank you for reading, guys. You will find out in the next chapter why Cain was in the hospital for so long. See you soon.
