THE DETECTIVES WERE at the district and had been working since Kim was shot the previous night. There was no shooter. Someone had set up a shotgun that went off when Kim rang the doorbell. Roman had joined them in the bullpen in plain clothes.

Antonio walked into the bullpen, holding up a photo. "Dr. Isaac Webber, professor of psychology at central Chicago University." He put the picture on the whiteboard.

Hank had followed him into the bullpen. "The first victim we found was Webber's mentor. Lifelong friends."

"It can't be a coincidence that his mentor and his son both wind up dead inside 24 hours," Alvin spoke.

"It's not a coincidence," Jay stated. "The son's license plate was found at the murder scene."

"Right, but his prints weren't," Kevin told him.

Amy then spoke up from her desk. "We recovered two shotguns, both had defaced serial numbers. And no ballistic matches."

"The liquid in the tub was homemade nitric acid, and the victim had been in there for two days," Jay continued. He was leaning on his desk- across from Amy. "Then all of a sudden, out of the blue, we get called to the house to do a spot check? Come on. There were no mistakes. Someone wanted to link Travis Webber to that murder. That license plate was planted."

"Hold on, I got something," Hank cut in. He held up a piece of paper. "This is a restraining order Webber took out against one of his students. Kid named Spencer York. Let's get him down here. I wanna know where he's been the last two days."

Amy grabbed her jacket and motioned for Jay to follow her.

The two went down to the university to talk to Spencer York. They entered the classroom where a woman was sitting. "Excuse me." The woman looked up from her notebook when she heard Jay's voice. "We're looking for Dr. Webber's class."

"Found it," the woman replied. "I'm Abby. I'm his teaching assistant. He was late, so I canceled class."

The detectives stood in front of her. "Did he call in today?" Jay questioned. "Did he email you?"

"Oh, no." Abby stood up. "Is something wrong?"

Amy didn't answer the question; instead, she asked one of her own. "Do you know a Spencer York?"

Abby glanced between the detectives briefly. "We're both getting our doctorate degrees. Or, he was, until he cracked up."

"Cracked up?"
