IT HAD BEEN A MONTH since Andy died on that call. The house hadn't been the same since. There was a lot of tension between the lieutenants, who were at odds about that day. Both were passing on the blame to the other. Everyone could see they weren't getting along.
Casey and Severide found themselves in Boden's office once again, getting scolded by their chief. They argued a lot, and he was tired of it. They were the lieutenants, and the firefighters looked up to them, so they had to behave better.
"Am I interrupting?" A voice asked from the door. The lieutenants turned to see who spoke, and there she stood. Melisa glanced awkwardly between the men, with a small smile on her face.
"It's all right," Boden responded, standing up. "You must be Melisa Bishop." He went over and shook her hand. "Chief Boden."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too." Boden stepped back and looked at the confused lieutenants. "Guys, this is Bishop. She is transferring here from another firehouse." He turned to Casey. "She's going to be on truck. So make sure you treat her fairly."
Although he was taken aback, Casey nodded in understanding. They had never had a woman on truck before. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Bishop."
Melisa shook his hand. "You too, lieutenant." She also shook hands with Severide before following Casey out of Boden's office.
"I'll introduce you to the other firefighters on truck," Casey told her. "But first, you need to change." Melisa was in jeans and a t-shirt. He led her to the locker room. "This is yours."
"Thank you." Melisa walked up to her new locker. "You're not going to go easy on me, are you? You'll treat me like your other firefighters?" She had been treated like a basket case in the other firehouse. It was one of the reasons she transferred. She didn't want to be treated differently because of her gender.
Casey shook his head. "I won't go easy on you."
"Good."
After getting changed, Melisa got a tour from Casey. The last room was the kitchen, where some firefighters were hanging out. The paramedics were there as well.
"Guys," Casey got their attention. He didn't know how the guys would react to Melisa being on truck. "This is Melisa Bishop. She transferred from another firehouse and is joining us on truck."
Melisa knew immediately how they felt about her being there. She could see it on their faces. They looked taken aback but also skeptical. Like they didn't trust her, which she could understand since they had just met. But it was the reason behind the lack of trust that she hated. She had gotten the same treatment in her last firehouse.
