AMY WALKED INTO the district with a hot cup of coffee in hand, which she placed on Trudy's desk. She brought Trudy coffee every other day.
Trudy didn't think she would like Amy when she first started working in Intelligence since she had transferred from New York, but she started warming up to the detective when she began bringing her coffee. That was something Amy frequently did.
The two would greet each other, but they never had small talk since they weren't close. This morning was different.
Amy greeted Trudy, as she did every morning, and Kim and Roman, who were standing by her desk. "Good morning to you too, detective Hughes." Trudy sounded chipper, and she was smiling.
Roman and Kim weren't the only ones taken aback by this. Amy stopped in her tracks and looked at the sergeant with a puzzled expression. "What?" She uttered.
The smile on Trudy's face remained. "Well, that's your name, isn't it?" She said it in a joking manner, which was unusual for her.
Amy went up to Trudy's desk again. "You don't know my name. You've never called me by my name."
"I don't know what you're talking about, detective." Trudy was keeping up the act.
"You've called me detective but never my name. Columbia is what you usually call me because you like to make fun of me for having gone to an Ivy League school. Are you okay?"
Trudy nodded. "I'm fine."
Amy nodded back at her. She honestly didn't want to stand there and talk anymore, so she chose to let it go.
