OTIS SAW GABBY arrive at the firehouse. It was her first day as a candidate on Truck 81. Casey was walking alongside her. "Oh!" Otis exclaimed. "What do we have here? Is this a new candidate?"

"She's all yours, fellas," Casey told them before walking away.

Cruz leaned away from the truck and put his hands on his hips. "I hope you're ready to finally get your hands dirty."

"Oh, absolutely," Gabby responded in a playful tone. She was holding a bag of groceries. "Just as soon as I drop this-"

"That can wait," Otis interrupted her. Gabby followed him to the side of the truck. "Do me a favor and grab a spanner wrench from compartment three, would you?" He tapped the side of the truck with his clipboard.

"Uh, yeah, okay." Gabby put the bag down. She opened the compartment door, and a fake snake fell out. She didn't flinch.

"Oh!" Otis exclaimed, a grin on his face. He was expecting her to be startled and was disappointed that it didn't happen. "Hey, come on. You're supposed to-"

"What?" Gabby cut him off. "Scream like a seven-year-old, like you did on your first shift?"

"That is not quite what happened."

"Yeah, it did," Cruz spoke.

"You wanna prank the new girl? You better come at her with more than a-"

"Is that smack talk coming from the candidate?" Hermann spoke, interrupting her.

He was making his way over with Melisa. The two were looking at each other with the same serious expression. "Yeah," she responded. They looked at Gabby. "I do believe it is."

Gabby realized how she came off and knew it was wrong. "Okay, all right, let's start over, okay?" She chuckled slightly. "Um, I'm really happy to be here, and I know that I have a lot to learn, and I do not expect any special treatment-"

"Yeah, yeah. What's in the bag?"

"Oh. Lunch. It's an old family recipe." Gabby grabbed the bag.

"Don't let us stop you on your way to your new workstation," Hermann stated.

"That would be the kitchen," Cruz added, leaning against the truck.

Gabby nodded and smiled, but they knew she was annoyed. Not that she could express that to them. She stepped over the fake snake and went inside.
