ANTONIO SPED TO THE STORE and ran by all the officers to get to his wife. He embraced her as soon as he was near her. What had happened was terrible, and they were worried.

"Our baby, he's got to be scared," Laura said as they pulled away. She had been crying, which was understandable.

"I will get him back."

"I know you will. You have to."

Antonio turned to Hank, who was standing close by. He approached his sergeant. "What do we know?"

"There's no cameras in the alley," Hank informed him. "We're checking streets on both sides for ATM video."

"Neighbors?"

"One lady gave us a white van, but no license, no driver description, nothing. Detectives are rolling, and squads are canvassing the area, knocking on doors, and checking for cameras. Someone's on the pods right now."

"We have security cameras out front, but nothing in the alley."

"I know." They turned when they heard a man yelling over at them in Spanish. Officers were holding him out. He was holding something in his hand. "Let him in!" The man rushed over to Antonio and handed him an envelope.

Antonio opened the envelope and pulled out a letter. There was a message on it. "Pulpo free by midnight, or your son dies," he read the note.

The first thing Hank and Antonio did was get back to the district to talk to Pulpo. He was in a holding cell. "Where's my son?"

Pulpo glanced around the cell and looked under the bench where he was seated. He was acting clueless, which made Antonio mad. "Uh, I know he's not here. Beyond that..." he trailed off.

"I don't think you want me to ask you again."

Pulpo smiled like he didn't have a worry in the world. "Ah, sí, sí, sí, sí. I heard about this type of thing back in Bogotá. Yeah. Your son was kidnapped, yes?" He chuckled. "Yes. Yeah. I read that many times. Many, many times. If the kidnappers were given what they wanted, then the wife or son was returned. Not a single scratch on their faces."

Antonio slammed his hands on the cell door before storming off. Pulpo was pissing him off. "Maybe you should give them what they want, Antonio," Pulpo called after him. "Whatever that may be. If you want to see Diego again, that is."
