THE TRUCK CAME to a controlled stop on the side of the road, where a vehicle accident occurred. A man rushed to the firefighters as they exited the truck. "I don't know why the safety shut-off didn't work. I didn't even know about the leak till some drivers started honking at me."
The cops blocked the cars coming from each direction. "What are you transporting?" Casey asked the man.
"Hydrochloric acid. I put down some sandbags to try to contain it, but..." he trailed off.
"Clear the area right away," Casey ordered his men. "Get these people back!"
Melisa and Otis ordered the people to get back and away from the scene. Hermann was setting up traffic cones.
Kelly was giving orders to his men. They were doing their thing, and Casey went back to Truck. "We need to set up a hot zone extending to the far sidewalk. No one goes inside the zone without SCPA and protective gear."
Kelly got into a hazmat suit with another firefighter on Squad. They got to the truck because the leak was worsening, and they had to turn it off. There was some sand, so they used it to stop the acid from spreading.
That was when Gabby saw a truck, and she got an idea. Hermann saw she was up to something. "Dawson, what are you doing?"
Gabby dropped her gear and helmet. "Check out that dump truck." She ran over and stopped the truck. They watched as she got into the driver's seat and started driving.
The chief walked up to them, and he saw Gabby. "Hold on a minute." Casey stood next to him. "Is that Dawson driving that truck?"
"Yeah, it is," Melisa responded. Gabby drove over the acid and released the sand, which squad then spread out.
Casey and Boden exchanged glances. Kelly got the valve closed, which was good. Chief Jones showing up, on the other hand, was not.
He walked up to the chief, his hands in his jacket pockets. "Looks like you guys have this under control."
"Uh, yeah. The area was isolated, we've contained the spill," Boden explained. "We're gonna stay on the scene until the response team neutralizes the acid."
Chief Jones looked over and saw Gabby get out of the truck with a grin. She was proud of what she did, not even thinking about how she disobeyed orders. "Shouldn't your candidate be in protective gear?"
Boden didn't respond. He just looked at Casey, who was Gabby's lieutenant. Casey walked over to Gabby. "The driver raised the chute for me, showed me how to release the sand."
