EVERYONE RUSHED to the hospital when they heard what happened. Someone had crashed into the ambulance, and Shay and Gabby were injured.

Casey practically ran over to the chief. "What have you heard?"

"Moderate traumatic brain injury," Boden responded. "And they've located a brain swelling, so they're gonna do an MRI, try to determine the extent of the damage."

"If anybody can find a way to rally, it's Shay," Mouch some.

"And Dawson's all right?" Casey asked.

"She has a laceration on her leg, but other than that, she's fine. They're gonna release her in a minute."

Casey turned to the firefighters. "The other driver, this tow truck, was he DUI?"

"No," Melisa answered. "Breathalyzer came up negative."

"Stupid freak thing," Peter added. "Truck blew a tire."

"What about Shay's family?"

"Mom's in Tacoma," Kelly answered Casey. "Dad's in Baton Rouge." He was pacing back and forth. "I left a message for them both."

"Every thought, every prayer needs to be directed down that hallway," Boden said.

CASEY WAS THE FIRST to approach Gabby when she walked into the firehouse. The two shared a long hug. Kelly stood from his seat. "Shay?"

"Uh, she's still in ICU, but the brain swelling subsided, and she won't need surgery or the ICP catheter." The chief had walked in just in time to hear the news. "They're hoping she is out of the woods."

"Just spoke with Chief Hatcher." They looked at Boden as he continued. "In the absence of Shay, candidate Peter Mills will fill the vacated post in an EMT capacity."

"For how long?" Gabby asked. She didn't look completely comfortable with this decision.

"Till Shay's back in this house."

"Hey, hey!" Otis exclaimed. He held up the newspaper he was reading. "Finally, some good news."

Melisa looked at him from her spot on the round table. "What is it?"

"That fire on North Hamlin, guess who the body was." Otis proceeded to read the news article. "The Chicago medical examiner identified it to be that of Manuel 'Flaco' Rodriguez, purported leader of the street gang, Insane Kings, wanted for a string of unsolved West Side murders, said CPD spokesman."
