ERIN RAN OUT OF the bar with the gun in her hand. Amy had gotten back inside to check if everyone was okay. A black car drove by, and someone was firing shots from the open window.

She shot back, hitting the window of the car. Erin put her gun away once the vehicle is out of reach. She pulled out her radio. "Lincoln 5021 emergency. I need backup at 4292 South Emerald Street."

Erin returned to the bar. "Was anyone hit?" She asked the other two detectives. Amy was pressing a towel against Maddie's neck, where she had been hit. Jay was kneeling next to her, trying to comfort her. The bartender had already called 911. No one else had been hurt.

Maddie was awake but was struggling to breathe. "You're gonna be okay," Jay kept telling her. Amy could tell he was freaking out, despite what he was telling Maddie.

The ambulance soon showed up. Erin led the paramedics to Maddie. "Shot to the neck," she told them. "She is behind the bar with my partners."

"All right. We got it from here," Sylvie took over for Amy. "I need the stretcher, the backboard, and kerlix for the bleeding."

Amy pulled Jay away from Maddie so the paramedics could help her. She looked at her partner, who seemed to be scared. "We're gonna get him," she told him sternly.

THEY GOT BACK to the district. Amy had to wash her hands as they were covered in Maddie's blood. And she tried to comfort Jay and told him she would be fine, but it didn't seem to have worked.

Hank was in the bullpen when Amy, Erin, and Jay walked in. "So you knew the victim?" He asked Jay.

"Maddie Callahan. She worked there," Jay responded.

"No I.D. on the shooter?" Hank directed the question to Amy.

"No, patrol's going door to door in the neighborhood looking for witnesses."

Antonio got off the phone. He went to Jay's desk. "That was the hospital. Your friend's in ICU, but she's alive."

"Thanks."

"Hey, it's not your fault." Antonio was stern, and Jay could tell he meant what he was saying. "Someone needs to talk to Bembenek," Antonio told Hank.
