An old song your mother used to sang came rushing back.
Faintly about tumbles and a hill.
You forced your eyes open.
You were riding on-top of a horse, at the front of the lines. Then...it could only mean one thing.
Your head was rested on someone's chest.
You looked up.
"Levi!" You threw your arms around his neck as he held the reins, his arms surrounding you as you sat on-top of his horse, sideways.
"Tch. What are you doing?" He asked, and you let go of his neck.
"Eren... Mikasa, where are they? Are they hurt? Are you hurt?" You peppered him with questions.
"They're in the rear- unhurt, although the brat's unconscious."
"...what about you, Lev?" You look up at him.
"You don't need to worry about me." He replied.
You sigh. "Where are you hurt?" You ask.
"I told you-"
"Let's stop here for a break." Erwin announced, slowing his horse down.
You demanded Erwin to help you off, using your drowsiness as an excuse.
Levi jumped off and made a 'tch' noise. "Come on." He said, his arms open for you.
A look of surprise fluttered across your face. You almost fell off when you felt his arms around your waist, pulling you off the horse.
You gradually inched off, your arms around his neck again as he lifted you off and onto the ground.
"Thanks." You beam at him, before skipping away to check on Mikasa and Eren.
But shouts stopped you.
"Levi?" You turn around, a figure screaming at him made you raise your eyebrow in question.
You willed yourself to calmly walk over, your hand on Levi's back, as if telling him you were there.
"He's still back there! We need to retrieve his body!"
Your eyes snapped to the man. "You wish to go back to the dangerous forest?" You ask, watching him take a step back, nervously.
Your eyes glittered with amusement.
"(Y/N), I..."
"You what?"
"You all are monsters!! You have no emotions, do you?!"
'Ah. He burst.'
"Levi..." You watched him walk back to his horse calmly, but there was something wrong.
He took another step.
'As I thought.'
"Levi." You called to him. "Come here." You grabbed his hand, and sat him on the ground.
He started getting up again, but you pushed him back on the ground. "Stay." You warned.
He sat back down, reluctantly.
You ran to the medic, and grabbed a long stick and box. Running back to Levi, you flipped open the lid and brought out the rolls of gauze.
"Leg out." You commanded. Levi stubbornly refused.
You grab his leg, forcefully. You knew it hurt, but Levi didn't wince, whimper, or even move.
"For now..." You quickly bandaged his leg. "Just stop moving so much."
You stopped wrapping his foot so tightly, and rested your hands on his knee, staring up at him with scared eyes.
"Why did you say anything?" You asked, helping him up. "There's no need to cause others worry." Levi said, walking to his horse and jumping on.
You looked up at him.
He looked down at you.
A few silent seconds passed.
"Are you getting on?" He asked, impatiently, holding out a hand for you. You felt a smile on your face.
"Of course. One moment." You grabbed the box and returned it to the medic, smiling and thanking him.
You passed many and many carts of dead bodies.
Some you knew, and some you would never get to know.
Those people...would never see light, and would never feel the grass underneath their feet again.
But you kept your eyes on Levi as he sat high on-top his horse, his eyes on you, watching you take every step.
You strolled past the many carts, and the mutters of the people. One specific comment...
"Monsters. Destroyers. Heartless. That's what the Survey Corps are. And that Captain Levi? Does he even have emotions?"
You paled, your blood rushing to your head. You turned, your brown eyes glaring at him.
"(Y/N)."
You turned back around, storming back to Levi. You, clearly upset, threw yourself on top of the horse with Levi.
"Calm down."
You gripped the reins. "I'm calm."
You heard a sigh. "Just wait until we get back. Can you control yourself?"
Your hands tightened around the reins. "I can handle myself." You remembered standing among the crowd with Levi and another girl, watching the Survey Corps with bright eyes.
But it seemed only kids were their allies. You felt someone removing your hands from the reins.
You look down at the ground, shutting your eyes tight and balling your hands into fists.
You felt Levi touch your back gently. Your shoulders...then your spine. You sighed- slowly your hands stopped shaking. You rubbed your eyes with your hands tiredly.
"Lev...thanks." You look back at him, his hands returning to the reins.
"It still helps?"
You nodded. "I can't believe you remember."
"Time to leave!"
You heard Erwin's voice, and threw on your coat, almost hitting Levi in the process.
"Oh, right. Where did my horse go?" You ask Levi, as he shook the reins, and the horse started moving forwards.
"I think Armin's taking care of her."
"I think it's a her." You commented, staring up ahead. A bright sun beamed down on the dry earth.
You patted the horse's sweaty flank. "Good girl. Or boy." You whisper into the horse's ear.
You straightened. "Let's go home, Levi."
