Thursday morning, I pried my eyes open. I really didn't want to go to school but I knew that I had to. I threw the covers off me and the cold morning air hit my bare legs giving me goosebumps. I walked towards the second door in my bedroom which acted a bit like a window since it was the only thing with a window in my room. Without that door, my room would have one door and that's it- no bedroom window.
I opened the old, unattractive bottle green curtains and sunlight streamed in, temporarily blinding me. I blinked several times and when my eyes adjusted to the brightness, I changed into my school uniform. I brushed my teeth and washed my hair and then combed my hair making sure I didn't have any awkward kinks.
Mum was making french toast and I took my usual seat at the table next to dad. It was strange, they don't normally do this. I ate my breakfast with orange juice and walked outside. Despite the sun shining, it was cold and windy.
As I walked, the wind relentlessly tugged at my hair. I wrapped my arms around myself as a shield from the cold. I walked alone for a while but then someone wrapped thier arms around my body.
There's one thing that I can't stand and that's being touched, especially without permission. I quickly wriggled out of their grip and turned around to see who it was. Adam stood, smirking, his black hair moving with the wind, underneath his left eye was a purple bruise. I gasped, remembering what Adam had told me last night. I slowly reached out and touched it with my index finger. He winced.
"That looks nasty."
"Yeah," he shrugged.
"Why are you here?"
"What?" he grinned. "A guy can't see his girlfriend?" I blushed at the word. I was his girlfriend. I smiled and he took my hand in his. We walked to school, our fingers interlocked.
When we arrived at school, we had to part our separate ways but before we did, Adam pulled me in a long hug. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist and I wrapped my around his neck. We stayed in that position for a while but then he pulled away, gave me a kiss on my forehead and walked away.
I stayed in the same place.
I wanted to feel my stomach turn.
I wanted to feel like I weighed nothing.
That's what I always imagined my first kiss would be like, so why wasn't I like that?
It's just a peck on the forehead Anna. It's not a proper kiss.
Everyone was looking at me and I felt my face flush. I walked quickly away and joined Louise, Danielle, Faye and Emily's circle.
"How was it?" Louise asked as soon as I approached the group.
Well hello to you too.
"How was what?"
"The date!" She squealed. "How far did you go?" She started jumping up and down in a spot.
I stared at her. "It was good, yeah..." I saw Michael walking into school. I walked away without saying goodbye and caught up to him. "Hi Michael."
"Hello sweetheart," he smiled at first but then stopped. "What's the matter?"
"Like you don't know," I spat out.
"Anna, if I did then I wouldn't need to ask," he placed a hand on my shoulder but I shrugged him off.
"I found out about what you did."
He looked at me blankly. "You need to stop talking in codes and just tell me straight up."
"You hit Adam."
He laughed. "Yes. Yes I did," he smiled proudly.
"It's not a good thing."
"Maybe not but he got what's coming to him," he smiled, relishing the memory.
"Why. You don't seem to have even a bruise so I doubt that he fought back!" my voice was starting to rise so I took a deep breath and calmed myself down.
"You didn't hear what he was saying. I only hit him for you!"
I scoffed. "For me? How could it be for me!" People were starting to watch now. Michael noticed so he grabbed my arms and took me inside the girls toilet locking us both in a stall. "Girls toilets."
"I don't care. It's the exact same except no urinals. Listen, you just need to trust me." He unlocked the stall and was about to walk out, he turned to me and said. "Be careful. If anything happens, then just call me." I heard the bathroom door swing shut.
What did he mean be careful? That's the second time he told me to be careful now. The bell rang interrupting my thoughts so I made my way to Registration. That boy should stop talking in riddles.
I spent both break and lunch with Louise and the rest but today, for once, I wasn't ignored. They involved me in their conversation fully. The asked me questions and talked to me. But at lunch, the topic about my new-found friends came up again.
"I just remembered Anna, you didn't answer my questions." Louise said nonchalantly.
"What were they?"
"How far have you and Adam gone?"
"Not that far, he just gave me a kiss on the forehead this morning."
Simultaneously, all the girls let out their aw's.
"Are you having an affair with him?" Faye asked. Louise elbowed her.
"What?" I asked, almost chocking on my sandwich.
"Well, there's a rumour around school that you and Michael went in the girls toilet before registration and we did see you leave with him."
Wow, that was fast.
"Which toilets?"
"The one that no one goes to because of all the period blood that's been smeared on the walls," Danielle chipped in. I pulled a face remembering the first time I saw it, congealed black blood was everywhere all over the walls but people still go there sometimes if they want a bit of privacy.
"Well yeah, we did go to the toilet's but-"
"I thought so!" Louise interrupted me. "Did you two get frisky?" She giggled.
"No, he just warned me about something."
"About what?"
Persistent little morons...
"About Adam."
