There's a saying that explains how playing the idiot can cause you to see the true intentions of the people around you.
Dad once told me that it would be smart of me to learn my mistakes, but what would be smarter is learning the mistakes of others. He said this to my brothers as well which we all took by heart. But what my father has also mentioned was playing to fool.
Denny really took that one to the heart. I have seen him grown up as the child that's loud, clumsy and very annoying, but when it matters most, he can be the smartest man. He always got good grades and he's a genius when it comes to Hockey. He once told me that playing the idiot can be fun as it causes people to look down on you and that's when you should come out on top.
Which is why Denny always comes in second in card games. However, Denny likes to talk but he never barks what he couldn't bite.
Chilly was a little different, he didn't like playing the fool. He does what he needs, but he doesn't bark. Chilly just stays quiet and plays the game, it's not until he wins that he talks. It even hard to trash talk at him since Chilly rather show his results than speak big about it. It's why most of the times he's either first or wins.
Eros is just quiet before, during and after the game wether he's wining or losing. He doesn't play the fool like Denny, but he also doesn't talk like Chilly after a win. He took more into what dad said about learning about other peoples mistakes. He observes and takes in whatever information is given. He listens. When a family member made a comment about how quiet he was, Dad said he wasn't quite, he just simply observing.
I, on the other hand, took it all by heart. I can play the fool and I can observe, and learn from others mistakes.
I learned their secrets because I listen. I learn their mistakes because I observe. I succeeded because I work hard. And I'm on top because I'm underestimated.
But mom has once mentioned that sometimes being a fool can be good because that way, we don't see things that could hurt us.
I did that.
That's the one I followed while growing up. I turned a blind eye and became the fool about my emotions because it hurt less than admitting the truth, but now that I'm in a fake relationship with the one that I have turned myself into the fool just so I won't be able to admit my own feelings, it hurts. Because I see more than I want to.
Just like right now. I'm standing in the gym, where I'm with the score paper as there's another volleyball game today that's played in the school. James is on the court with some of the guys. Elio and Emma are also here for the game. They're here to watch but what annoys me is the questions that I'm James's girlfriend. Some are having some hard time believing it, but my issue was going to the bathroom and hearing how they thought Emma and James would have been the end game.
How it should be Emma.
There comparison between Emma and I.
"Callista," I blink a few times as it felt like I haven't blinked in a while. I even go and rub my eyes.
"Yeah?" I answer, knowing James is standing in front of me.
"You okay?" he asked and I nod, wiping my little tears from not blinking for who knows how long.
"Yeah. Just forgot to blink," is all I say as I look at him and smile. I then look around to notice that there's a few eyes on us, trying to confirm if we're really a couple or just faking it. Seeing if the rumours are true or not.
"Daydreaming again?" James chuckles as he crosses his arms.
I look at the ground and smile. He somewhat knows me and I haven't noticed it while growing up because that would just hurt. What if he sees through me and sees my feelings I have buried within on my face now that they have resurfaced? What if he creates a distant between us because of these feelings?
