"I must say, we called it," Mariana, James's mother, says to mine at her dinner table.
"Mama, por favor." James tongue switches and I wonder every time why it makes him more attractive when he speak Spanish? Is it because I don't understand it? Is it because Spanish is known to be one of the love languages out there in the world?
"What? Amor mio, listen, Helene and I have had this conversation since we've known each other." Mariana informs him.
"She's right." My mom says with a nod while covering her mouth as she still had some food.
"We gave up hope of ever being sister-in-laws once you two made it clear that it would never happen but look at you two now!" Mariana says excitedly. "I just can't wait for the wedding and the grandkids--"
I started coughing due to chocking on my meal. She caught me off guard while eating. James reaches for my water and passes it to me. I take it and take a few sips to be able to swallow down my food. "Sorry, sorry." I say once I was able to clear my throat but my voice still comes out rough.
James is highly rubbing my back for comfort. I give him a reassuring smile and then look back at my mom. "We can always just break up, secretly get back together and never tell you guys until the wedding if you keep bringing that up," I suggest and the horror in my mother's eyes and even Mariana's almost has me breaking character. "Or maybe we don't say anything until the wedding is over, we'll send a photo telling you guys we got married when we're on our honeymoon, how about that?"
Dad starts laughing as well for James's dad, Gian. The twins looks disgusted and make some kind of comment how I would look horrible in a wedding dress. Aimilios took out his phone to find a photo of a money in a wedding dress and say how it's me.
I roll my eyes and continue to eat Mariana's Quesadilla.
"You do know they already have a whole wedding planned, right?" James ask me quietly as he leans in towards me. Everyone at the table seems to be in a conversation that they're not really paying much attention to us. He even moved his chair closer to mine. He has an arm on my chair. I'm on his right.
"Pretty sure they had it the day they found out you were a boy." I mention as I was born before he was.
James chuckles, "We're just ten months apart, amor."
I don't say anything after that, just continue eating my meal. The conversations goes to weekend plans, to how my older brothers are doing, to universities plans, down to graduation. The topic changes randomly and it quite easy to change the topic when my mother's and Mariana's attention spam is so low that they don't realize they're having fifteen different conversations at the same time. Dad and Gian look used to it by now that they're in their own conversations now.
Dinner was finished and I offered to clean the dishes as I was bored. I was cleaning peacefully while everyone else was in the living room until I felt a hand on my waist. I look back to find James looking at the plates I'm cleaning.
"We have a dishwasher, you know," James reminds me which is true but my social battery is very down and I don't want to join them at this moment. I don't have the energy right now.
"Just so you know, there wouldn't be any time to take a honeymoon photo to send to our parents." James says, letting me go and going to the side. He turns his back to the counter and gets on it. He simply sits while watching me clean.
"Hm?" I'm a little confused by what he means by that. But I put two and two together and remember one of the dinner conversations. "Oh, that? Don't worry about it. it's not like we're actually going to get married or have a honeymoon." I chuckle despite there been an uncomfortable feeling in my heart.
