Peter's heart raced with excitement as he swung through the city with Artemis clinging to him. The wind rushed past them, and he could feel her gripping tightly, her breath warm against his neck. He wanted this night to be perfect, to show her the world through his eyes.
As they landed softly on the rooftop of a tall building, Peter looked over at Artemis. She was slightly breathless, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the view. The city sprawled out below them, a sea of twinkling lights and bustling life.
"Welcome to our first stop," Peter said with a grin, gesturing to the rooftop setup he'd prepared. "Rooftop movie night."
Artemis's eyes widened in shock as she saw the cozy arrangement—rolled-up pillows and blankets arranged in front of a large screen, a projector set up, and a small table loaded with snacks and drinks.
"This is amazing, Peter!" she exclaimed, walking over to the setup. She glanced over to him and so how he was staring at her with a shocked expression from her excitement. He hadn't ever seen this side of her. She quickly cleared her throat, "It's pretty good." she said in a much calmer tone, "How did you pull this off?"
Peter shrugged, trying to play it cool despite the warmth spreading through him at her reaction. "I have my ways. Plus, a friend of mine owed me a favor. Didn't want this to be an epic fail after all."
Artemis tried to hide her joy. She walked around the set-up, "Well, I say you did a pretty good job."
They sat on the blankets and leaned against the pillows. Peter pressed a button on a remote, and the projector flickered to life, casting a familiar movie onto the screen.
Artemis chuckled as she recognized the opening scene. "An old classic, huh?"
Peter grinned. "I figured it would be a good choice."
As the movie played, they shared snacks and quiet conversation, the city noises a distant hum below them. The rooftop felt like their own private world, a haven from the chaos of their superhero lives. Peter found himself sneaking glances at Artemis, marveling at how her face lit up with laughter and how her eyes sparkled with joy.
Halfway through the movie, Artemis leaned over, her shoulder brushing against Peter's. "You know, I've never done anything like this before. It's... really nice."
Peter felt a rush of pride and happiness. "I'm glad you're enjoying it."
Artemis looked at him, her eyes warm and appreciative. "I am. This is one of the best nights I've had in a long time."
They returned their attention to the movie, comfortable in each other's presence. As the credits finally rolled, Peter turned to Artemis with a grin. "Ready for the next part?"
Artemis nodded eagerly, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "What do you have in mind?"
Peter stood up, offering his hand to her. "You'll see. Hold on tight."
She took his hand, and they swung off into the night once more. The sensation of flying through the air was exhilarating, and Peter felt a thrill of excitement as they soared between buildings. They eventually made it to the top of a clocktower.
On the top was a couple of dishes on a fancy table. The food was all covered with a silver cloche. The clocktower's spire rose above them, casting a long shadow over the setup, illuminated by string lights Peter had meticulously arranged earlier. The lights twinkled like stars, adding a romantic touch to the already picturesque scene.
Artemis looked around, clearly impressed. "You really went all out, didn't you?"
Peter grinned, feeling a mix of pride and nerves. "I wanted to make this special. I hope you like it."
He guided her to the table, pulling out a chair for her. As she sat down, Peter lifted the cloche from the first dish, revealing a beautifully arranged plate of souvlaki, grilled to perfection and accompanied by roasted vegetables. The aroma was mouthwatering.
"I remembered you mentioning you liked Greek food," Peter said, taking a seat across from her and uncovering the other dish. It was a vibrant Greek salad with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and feta cheese, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with oregano.
Artemis's eyes lit up with genuine delight. "Peter, this looks amazing. How did you manage to get all this up here?"
Peter shrugged modestly. "A little help from friends. And some careful planning. Plus, I got the best tzatziki sauce in town. MJ made it." He pointed to a small bowl filled with the creamy, garlicky dip MJ had made.
Artemis reached for a piece of bread and dipped it into the tzatziki, taking a bite. Her eyes closed in appreciation. "This is fantastic. She really knows her stuff."
They began to eat, savoring the flavors of the well-prepared meal. The souvlaki was tender and perfectly seasoned, the vegetables charred just right, and the salad provided a refreshing contrast. The tzatziki added a delightful creaminess that tied everything together.
As they ate, the conversation flowed naturally. They talked about their recent adventures, their favorite movies, and shared funny stories from their pasts. He shared more than she did. The setting sun bathed the city in a golden hue, and the evening breeze carried the sounds of distant traffic and the occasional siren, a reminder of the world below.
Peter watched Artemis as she spoke, captivated by her confidence and the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed. He felt a deep connection with her, one that went beyond their shared experiences as heroes.
"Thank you for doing this, Peter," Artemis said, her voice sincere. "Didn't have a night like this in a while."
"I had a feeling." He took a sip of his drink and set it back on the table, "So... Artemis. I've done most of the talking here. Tell me about yourself. That I don't know at least."
Artemis looked away, "I don't think I really wanna talk about that yet..."
He quickly felt bad, "Sorry."
She quickly looked back at him, "No, no. Don't feel bad. I just don't wanna talk about it." She took another bite of her food, "So is this our last stop?"
He laughed a bit, "Yeah. Sorry about that. Gotta work on a budget, ya know. Also." he looked down at his watch, "Gotta be someone in 30 minutes."
"What for?" She took a sip.
"Uhh... You know the problem we had with Harry? With the symbiote gone and all?" He asked, still keeping the secret that he had the symbiote under his bed. She nodded, "Well. A very good friend owed me a favour and now Reed Richards is gonna try to create a cure from my blood."
"But I thought you couldn't? That your blood could turn him into something horrible?"
"Nothing's impossible for Mr. Fantastic. He examined my blood and created a serum. It won't cure Harry, but it'll weaken the disease. Give him more time to live and maybe we can find an actual cure. I'm headed over to The Baxter Building later and was actually planning on asking you if you wanted to come with. M'gann, Dick, Kaldur"
"I don't know. Science isn't exactly my strong suit."
"Come on. It'll be great. I'm sure you'll get along with Ben."
"Ben?"
"Ben Grimm. He's part of the team."
Artemis sighed took a strawberry from one of the dishes. She took a bit out of it and dusted off her hands, "Alright. For you."
"Yes!" he punched the air. "You're gonna love it there. I swear."
"Don't make me regret it."
He laughed, "Trust me. You won't."
Back at Peter's room,
Peter and Artemis walked arm-in-arm into his room, laughing together, "No, no. I really thought Johnny was on fire." he told her.
They then both froze when they looked in front of them. On his bed was M'gann... with the symbiote canister in hand. She looked up at him when they entered, "... Care to explain, Spider-Man?"
