"You have a sister???" Artemis questioned, her mouth full of fries, eyes wide with surprise.
"Her name's Teresa," Peter explained further, taking a small spoonful of his ice cream dish. The cold sweetness was a brief comfort against the rush of emotions he felt.
"I'm sorry." Megan put her drink down, her brow furrowing in confusion. "You're telling us you have a sister all this time? And you've never mentioned her once?"
Peter shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Didn't really think I needed to. I don't talk about my parents with you guys; doesn't mean I don't have 'em." He joked with a smile, but it quickly faded. "Also, it's 'had.'"
"Sorry?" Megan asked, even more confused.
"You said 'have'... It's 'had.'" His expression fell after he said this, and as the realization of what he meant sank in, so did everyone else's expressions.
"...We apologize," Kaldur said solemnly, his voice tinged with regret.
Peter quickly put his hands up to stop them. "No, no. Don't be sorry. You didn't know."
"...How did it happen?" Artemis asked gently, her tone softer now, filled with genuine concern.
"They left with my parents when I was 11. Died in the same plane crash with them." He looked down at his ice cream, the memories flooding back. He grew a small smile, remembering his little sister. "She always loved ice cream... She was 6 years old. She was smart too. Seriously, I was surprised..."
The whole group fell silent, unsure of how to respond or comfort him.
Conner then suddenly spoke up, breaking the heavy silence. "There's a robbery at a museum nearby. Maybe we could see what that symbiote can do." Peter looked up at Conner and gave him a grateful smile, thankful for the distraction.
Wally sat up, grinning. "Yeah. Let's see how much of a power-up you got."
"Is that a challenge?" Peter asked, a spark of his usual humor returning.
"Guys! Robbery!" Artemis scolded the two of them, bringing the focus back to the task at hand. All of them immediately got up and rushed out of the building, making sure to pay first.
Peter ran through an alley, ducking into the shadows. He began to take off his shirt to get to his black suit, but before he could finish, the symbiote automatically covered him, sliding over his clothes like liquid darkness. He looked down at his hands, seeing himself fully suited up as he continued running. "Cool." He leaped then swung off, the symbiote enhancing his movements and agility.
Spider-Man landed on the edge of the water tank perched atop a skyscraper, his black suit blending seamlessly with the shadows of the night. He scanned the skyline, searching for the nearby museum. Beside him, Superboy touched down with a soft thud. Kid Flash arrived in a blur of motion, his red and yellow costume vibrant against the dull cityscape. Miss Martian floated up beside them, her green skin glowing softly in the dim light.
Robin and Artemis approached from different angles using a grappling hook. Kaldur emerged gracefully from the rooftop access door. Peter broke the silence, "When was the last time we stopped these kinds of town-level crimes?" he asked curiously.
Dick, adjusting his mask, spoke first. "Last week."
Wally, cracking his knuckles, added, "A couple of days ago."
The rest of the team remained quiet and Peter nodded, realizing some hadn't never dealt with this sort of thing. Artemis never did. Neither did M'gann or Conner. And he doubted that Kaldur hadn't done it in a while. "Well, this should be fun then."
