The apartment was cozy yet minimalistic, situated on the upper floor of a nondescript building in downtown New York. Sunlight streamed through large windows, casting bright beams across the room. The walls were painted a soft beige, adorned with a few abstract paintings that added a splash of color to the otherwise calm atmosphere. A small living room area featured a plush, navy-blue couch with a couple of mismatched throw pillows, and a coffee table cluttered with takeout menus, a half-empty pizza box, and a few comic books scattered about. In one corner, there was a modest kitchenette, its countertops lined with various appliances—an electric kettle, a microwave, and a well-used toaster.
Wally was leaning against the kitchen counter, arms crossed, a light frown on his face as he explained the situation to MJ. "Look, MJ, I know it feels weird being here, but it's only temporary until we get Shocker sorted out. You're safer here than anywhere else right now."
MJ rolled her eyes, perched on the edge of the couch with her legs crossed. "But why not just go to the police? They can handle this kind of thing, right?" She leaned back, frustration clear in her tone.
Artemis, seated next to MJ, interjected, "And when has that ever stopped Shocker? He has a way of slipping through the cracks. The police won't do anything that gets him off the streets."
MJ huffed, glancing between them. "So, what? I'm supposed to sit here and wait for you guys to play superhero?"
Artemis chuckled lightly, shaking her head. "Shocker's got a bone to pick with Peter, and you just happen to be in the line of fire. We can't risk it."
"Exactly. Just think of this as a little vacation," Wally added, trying to lighten the mood. "You get to binge-watch all the shows you've missed while we handle the bad guy."
"Right, because that's what I want. To be stuck in a superhero's hideout instead of enjoying my life," MJ retorted, though the corners of her mouth twitched into a half-smile.
Artemis shrugged. "Look, it's better than being out there where Shocker could find you. Just hang tight, and we'll have this sorted soon enough. Besides, it's not like we're asking you to stay forever."
"Can you imagine the tabloids? 'MJ Watson, Superhero Sidekick,'" Wally joked, gesturing dramatically as if reading a headline. "The world isn't ready for that level of awesomeness."
MJ chuckled, shaking her head. "Oh, please. The last thing I need is more people thinking I'm involved with your superhero antics."
"Hey, you're the one who knows all of us now. You're practically a part of the team," Artemis teased, nudging MJ playfully.
"Team? More like a three-person waiting room," MJ replied, rolling her eyes again. "What are we supposed to do? Just sit around and wait for the news that Shocker's been caught?"
"Pretty much," Wally admitted, glancing at Artemis, who nodded in agreement.
They fell into a comfortable silence for a moment, the tension easing. MJ leaned back into the couch, her arms crossed, contemplating the situation. "Okay, but seriously. If we're stuck here, at least we can do something."
"What do you have in mind?" Wally asked, intrigued.
"Movies? We could do a marathon," MJ suggested, having no idea what to do.
Artemis raised an eyebrow. "What, like superhero movies? That seems a little...on the nose."
It felt like forever had gone by.
The room fell silent again, the slight excitement fading as they all stared into space, contemplating the situation. The tension in the air was palpable, each of them lost in their own thoughts. Eventually, Artemis returned with a bowl of popcorn, her expression less enthusiastic.
