We finally reached the front gates of Suna, quite winded from the quick travel. Well, the others were puffing and gasping; I was still in composure. During our travel here, we met Temari, who was returning to Suna and gave us safe passage through the treacherous sandstorm. To try to get through it by ourselves would have been too dangerous and tiring.
His eyes widened in surprise. "Lady Temari, you're here too? We've been waiting for you. Please, right this way," he exclaimed hastily. As we followed him into the village, he filled us in on their dire situation. "So you see, firstly, Lord Kazekage was taken, and then Lord Kankuro chased after them but was gravely wounded-"
"What?! Kankuro, too?!" Temari exclaimed.
"Yes, well, more than that, he has been poisoned, and we cannot identify it to create an antidote. They say he only has half a day left."
Sakura and I looked at each other. This was all left to us now.
"Hurry, Temari," Sakura pressed on.
"Sakura and I shall look at him," I added.
We entered the dimly lit room where Kankuro lay, his face pale and contorted with pain. Sakura and I dropped our packs to the floor simultaneously. A hurled attack from an elderly woman who all of a sudden mistook Kakashi for somebody else left us all dumbfounded until she realized her mistake and stepped back, flustered.
"You're all distractions," I said flatly, focused on Kankuro's labored breathing as Sakura took the lead.
Sakura quickened her pace towards Kankuro. Light green illumination of her healing ninjutsu enveloped her hands. She began gingerly to suck out the poison, and she did not divert her attention. "Most of it I've sucked out now, so there's no more immediate danger," she threw in.
Temari, who had been tautly hovering, slumped against the wall with a sigh of relief. The tension relaxed a little in the room, but I knew our work was far from over.
"Don't get too excited, we still have to remove minute quantities of toxins remaining within him," I said, donning my black gloves and preparing to help Sakura with the next phase of treatment.
Sakura nodded for the fact. "Someone go and fetch us some medical supplies," she ordered, her voice strict.
One of the Sand shinobi was quick to leave and get the necessary items. Chiyo, much calmer now, looked at us with curiosity and respect. "You remind me of that slug lass," she breathed, her eyes still in a bit of shock. "I never thought girls like you two would come."
Sakura smiled, unfazed, as she worked, "Yes, well, Lady Tsunade ordered only the two of us here. She's our mentor, you know!"
"All right! But we can't rest for too long! We gotta go after the Akatsuki!" Naruto exclaime.
