Damon
My mind hasn't stopped running over everything in the last hour since I arrived in California. I was already on my way when Abbie called. Well, when the sheriff of Beacon Hills called. Stefan didn't hear from her by lunch time, so he called her for an hour, and then Melissa.
When he found out the school was on lockdown, he called me to come check on her. He filled me in on my flight and then I got the call I feared. Abbie was being rushed to the hospital and they had no idea what was wrong with her.
Normally I would pass this off to one of her siblings, or even Avery, but when Stefan explained to me why they couldn't, I didn't question it.
I know mine and Abbie's past is still looming over my head, but there's a bigger question now. Why did she call me? Stefan said Rebekah was in New York. Why wouldn't she call her? Why me?
My mind is a mess, and I can't stop torturing myself by listening in on the baby's heartbeat.
Abbie's pregnant.
That's something else I've been trying to wrap my head around.
Of course when I first got the call, I didn't think they had the right person. Abbie's an original, she can't be killed. Still, Stefan and the Sheriff were insistent that I come. I see why now.
She's not that far along, but far enough to have a small bump. The list of questions I want to ask keeps getting longer, but I can't ask any until she wakes up. They said she's been out of it for four hours, and she woke up when they got her out of the school, but nothing since.
What happened to her in there? Why did Stefan leave her when she has a thirty million dollar bounty on her head. The phone call I got from Avery, threatening me if anything happened to her or if I even thought of cashing in on that bounty, was nothing short of graphic. The girl needs therapy.
There's a soft knock on the door, before Melissa pokes her head in. "How's she doing?" I shrug, leaning back in the chair. "She still hasn't woken up or moved." She nods, walking over to Abbie's side, checking the monitors she's connected to.
Deciding to get some answers, I lean up and look at her. "Does anyone know what happened in that school? My brother said she was volunteering for the PSAT's?" Melissa looks over her shoulder at me, before glancing back at the monitors.
"How well do you know Abbie?" Her heart is racing, and I wonder if she knows about me and Stefan. Is that what she's asking? If so, how much does she know? "I've known her for a while. Can I assume you know her well too?" She glances at me again, before letting out a slow breath and turning to look at me.
"I'm not sure if I'm able to answer all your questions, but I know some people who could and want to see her. Is that okay with you?" I nod, already knowing there was a group waiting for her. I didn't get to talk to any of them, or even stop to see how many there were, but I'm sure it's the group who was watching me when I came in.
"I'll be right back." She cast one last look at Abbie, her face softening, before leaving the room. Stefan said she made some friends here, but I wasn't expecting 7 people, much less teenagers, to walk in.
Melissa looks over at me, her eyes waiting to see how I'll react to all of them. "If this is too much, we can come back later." One of the guys say. He looks like he's the speaker of the group, but it's the one looking at Abbie like she's going to die that has my attention.
"It's fine." I step closer, trying to get a better look at the kid who's now holding her hand, fighting back tears. "Were you two close?" I ask, crossing my arms over my chest. His eyes don't leave her as he answers.
