46 - The stars overlooked pain
Hyacinth's POV
"I hate you, Veronica. You're so OA." Tia Sam's eyes rolled as she sat on the sofa, brushing
Tia Jezreel's hair while she slept on her lap.The soft strokes of the brush seemed to soothe both of them, creating a moment of quiet amidst the day's chaos.
Mrs. Veronica arrived not too long ago, causing alarm with her sudden entrance.
She carried Tia Jezreel in her arms, making us think something terrible had happened.
It turned out she had merely fallen asleep due to a mild fever. The sight of her being cradled like a child was both touching and worrisome.
"Sorry, she rarely gets sick, so I panicked," Mrs. Veronica apologized, her voice tinged with embarrassment.
She gently laid Tia Jezreel on the sofa, her brow furrowed with concern.
"Mom, here's the towel and warm water," Jezelle arrived in the living room, carrying a small basin with water and a white towel submerged in it.
Her steps were careful, almost reverent, as if she were approaching an altar.
"I'll do the wiping," my wife volunteered, surprising me as it wasn't a task she would normally undertake.
There was a quiet determination in her eyes, a tenderness that I hadn't seen before.
"Thank you very much, Cephues," Tia Sam said sincerely, her voice softening.
She stepped back, giving my wife space to tend to Jezreel.
"You know, kid, you really look like Jezreel. Are you sure hindi ka pinaglihi ng nanay mo sa kanya while she was pregnant with you?" Mrs. Veronica changed the topic of their conversation, her tone light but her eyes sharp.
I was just sitting on a single couch, observing my wife, trying to decipher the sudden shift in her demeanor.
I found it odd how cheerful and calm she was right now. It was as if the revelation from yesterday hadn't happened.
It was like she had reverted to her old self before the amnesia. Her movements were fluid, her smile genuine, as if the weight of her past had lifted, even if only temporarily.
"Many people have told me that. I'm flattered to be considered on the same level of beauty as Mrs. Jezreel. I guess she did at some point, I don't know. I've never met my mother." she replied humbly, her cheeks flushing slightly.
She dabbed the warm towel gently on Jezreel's forehead, her touch delicate and caring.
"So why was Jezreel in Manila? I thought you were on a family vacation?" Mrs. Veronica switched the topic again, making me dizzy with their conversation.
There was a hint of suspicion in her voice, a curiosity that demanded answers.
"I'm getting confused about what you really want to talk about," Tia Sam commented, her frustration barely concealed.
Cephues smiled, and even though it wasn't directed at me, I still felt butterflies wildly fluttering in my stomach.
Her beauty was unparalleled, a beacon that drew everyone's attention, including mine.
