Alina digs her nails into the scars on her palms as she makes her way to Defense Against the Dark Arts. The new professor seems better than last year's; at least he appears to understand the subject.
"Sunshine!" James Potter's voice echoes down the hall.
All the students pause to see who he's talking about.
Of fucking course.
Alina lets out an annoyed sigh and keeps walking. Sadly, he follows her.
James catches up to her on the left, while Peter Pettigrew nervously shuffles to her right.
"Potter, how many times do I have to tell you to leave me alone?" Alina turns and glares at him.
James shrugs. "I don't know, how many times have you told me already?"
"Too many to count."
"Triple that, then." He laughs as her glare intensifies.
Peter stays quiet, as usual. He always seems to want to fade into the background, staying close enough to be friends but far enough to avoid speaking.
Alina shoots a glance at Peter. He has a rather blank look on his face as he fiddles with the strap of his bag. She sort of wants to know what he's thinking.
She snaps out of her thoughts as they reach the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. When Peter sits down at a desk near the back, she quickly takes the seat beside him, hoping James will sit far away.
Sadly, he sits in front of them. Alina takes her books out of her bag, Peter doing the same.
The professor, Forrest Striker, is an okay teacher. He claps his hands lightly, the dark robes he wears swishing as he walks. "For the first portion of class today, we will focus on spells to use during a duel," he says, pausing slightly. "Find as many as you can in your books. For the second portion, we will be dueling. I'll pick your partners, and your spells must come from the books. No extras."
He turns near his desk to stare at them all. "If you need help finding anything, call for me. Other than that... begin."
Books open quickly, and murmurs break out among the students.
Alina opens her own book and pretends to search. She is quite good at dueling, possibly because of her seer visions.
Alina knows her family has ancient magic, not just because of the seer curse, but also because they are an old, respected family. They are bound to have powerful magic.
So yes, she is familiar with many spells in the book, even if she hasn't mastered them. Her attacks in dueling are never aggressive, which is why she usually wins. The other person gets caught up in anger and emotion. It's hard to get caught up in feelings when it feels like she has none.
"Rictusempra," Alina hears Peter whisper to himself, the word stumbling past his lips.
Peter frowns at the book, trying the pronunciation again.
