James Potter POV.

"Happy birthday!" James yells, making Sirius sit up in bed, blinking sleepily.

"It's my birthday?" Sirius mumbles, his voice thick with sleep.

"Yes!" James confirms with a wide grin.

"It's my birthday!" Sirius repeats, the realization jolting him fully awake. He springs out of bed, his excitement contagious. James's smile widens as he moves to wake Remus and Peter.

Birthdays are always fun. He loves birthdays.

The four boys quickly get ready for the day, with Sirius and Remus sticking close to each other. They have presents for Sirius, but that will come later.

As James sits on the edge of his bed, his thoughts drift to Alina. He wonders what she is up to. He knows she exacted revenge for Barty by charming the boy, who hurt Barty, belongings to randomly disappear, which is hilarious, even if he isn't supposed to know about it. Technically, he wasn't even supposed to tell Alina the name of the culprit, but he had, trusting her not to spread the word.

"Thinking about Alina again?" Remus asks, a teasing smile playing on his lips.

James scoffs. "What? No." He shakes his head, trying to look nonchalant.

Remus narrows his eyes. "You get this look on your face when you're talking or thinking about her."

"I don't talk or think about her," James denies, fiddling with his glasses.

"Yeah, sure," Remus mutters as he walks away.

James sighs, but before he can dwell on Remus's words, Sirius announces he is ready to go to breakfast. James quickly grabs some small fireworks from under his bed and stuffs them into his bag before following the others. Sirius and Remus walk ahead, deep in conversation, while James and Peter trail behind. James smiles at the sight, hoping they will get together soon, though he had been oblivious to their feelings until Sirius's ranting clued him in.

Apparently, Peter has known since first year. Peter seems to know a lot of things, much like Alina. It is almost eerie.

James's thoughts are interrupted as they enter the Great Hall. It is already bustling with students.

His eyes scan the room until they land on a blonde-haired girl at the end of the Slytherin table. Alina Nightshade is engrossed in a book, her hair falling around her face, catching the early morning sunlight and making it seem to glow.

Alina looks like the moon.

James snaps out of his reverie, tearing his gaze away from her to focus on Sirius. Forcing a large grin, he sits down beside Sirius, with Remus and Peter across from them.

"Happy birthday!" Marlene McKinnon exclaims as she sits down beside Sirius, wrapping an arm around his shoulder.

Marlene and Sirius dated briefly before they both realize they prefer the same gender.

"McKinnon," Sirius smirks at the blonde-haired girl. "How are you this fine morning?"

"I'm great," Marlene replies, her accent thicker in the early morning. "How are you, Black? Had any birthday cake yet?"

Sirius shakes his head. "No birthday cake." He turns to James. "You traitor, where's my cake?"

James laughs loudly. "You'll get it tonight, Padfoot. Don't pout."

"I don't pout!" Sirius protests.

"Yes, you do," Remus mumbles, his eyes widening slightly. Sirius either doesn't hear him or pretends not to.

James rolls his eyes. They are pathetically in love with each other, not that he can say anything—he thought he was in love with Lily.

James forces his mind away from his thoughts and glances at Peter, nodding slightly to his left. They both lean toward the edge of the table, allowing James to pass Peter the fireworks to set up on one side while he handles the other.

Peter takes them with a small, nervous smile before discreetly getting up to place them. Sirius, caught up in conversation, doesn't notice.

James smirks as he sets up the fireworks on his side of the table. He and Peter exchange a look before lighting them and returning to their seats.

A second later, loud red fireworks burst above their table. James's eyes, however, are on Alina.

When the fireworks pop, Alina flinches so violently he thinks she might fall off her seat if she weren't gripping the table. A sharp pang of guilt stabs at him.

He forces himself to look away before she catches him staring, laughing at Sirius's surprised face. Even Dumbledore is smiling, waving off the other professors to let them have their fun.

"Happy birthday!" James says again, clapping his hands. Sirius is beaming, his face flushed with excitement.

The fireworks float around for a bit, their magic keeping them alive until the students calm down. Even Remus is smiling warmly at Sirius.

"Happy birthday," a feminine voice breaks through James's thoughts. He flinches slightly before turning to look at the end of the table.

Alina.

She is staring at Sirius.

"Why, thank you, Lina," Sirius leans on the table to say with a smile.

Alina rolls her gorgeous eyes before turning and walking away.

"You're drooling," Sirius teases, bumping James's shoulder.

"No, I'm not!" James protests.

That night, they celebrate Sirius's birthday in the Gryffindor common room. The room buzzes with laughter and chatter, and Sirius has just blown out the candles on his cake.

A warm sense of friendship settles over James. It is in these moments, surrounded by friends, that he feels truly content.

But he won't admit that he keeps glancing at the common room entrance, waiting for Alina.
