James Potter POV.
James lies on his back, staring at the ceiling of his dorm, the early morning light barely filtering through the curtains. Usually, this is the time he'd go for a run—clear his head, get some air.
But not today.
Not with his mind still tangled up in thoughts of Alina. The way she practically bolted from him at the dance last night haunts him. He sighs deeply, dragging his hands over his face.
Merlin. He's so screwed.
Of course, he likes Alina. How could he not? Yet, she's just another girl out of his reach.
She said it herself—that she can't go to the dance with anyone who isn't a pureblood Slytherin. That means dating is probably off the table too.
Which means... not him.
His jaw clenches, frustration simmering beneath the surface. Why does he always do this? Why does he fall for people he has no shot at being with?
The memory of the bet flashes in his mind, and a wave of guilt crashes over him.
Fuck the stupid bet. It doesn't matter anymore. Not when he actually wants her.
With renewed determination, James sits up, grabbing his glasses from the nightstand and shoving them on. He reaches into the drawer, pulling out a piece of parchment and a quill. His schoolbook serves as a makeshift surface as he quickly begins to write.
Mum,
I need your help. Or maybe I just need someone to talk to.
There's this girl, Alina—the one I've mentioned before. I think... no, I know I like her.
We danced at the Valentine's ball last night, but she ran away from me, and I have no idea why.
She told me she can't date anyone who's not a pureblood Slytherin, her parents are like Sirius'—all about blood purity and family pride.
I really like her, but I don't think we could ever be together. It's killing me because I wish I could fix this, but... I don't even know where to start.
I love you, Mum.
James.
James stares blankly at the letter in his hand, unsure why he even wrote it. What's the point?
Still, he carefully folds it and slips it into an envelope. He'll head to the Owlery later to send it.
"James?"
He flinches at the sound, his head snapping up. Remus is sitting up in bed, looking groggy but awake.
"Sorry, did I wake you?" James whispers, feeling a bit guilty.
"No, you didn't," Remus mumbles, rubbing his eyes before narrowing them. "Why are you up? And why aren't you on your run?"
James hesitates, glancing around the dorm. Sirius and Peter are both still asleep, their soft snores filling the silence. He debates whether to say anything at all.
"You can't tell anyone," he finally whispers. "Not even Sirius."
Remus raises an eyebrow but nods. "Alright."
James takes a deep breath. "I like Alina."
Remus blinks at him, unimpressed. "Obviously. That's it?"
James frowns. "What do you mean obviously?" he whispers harshly.
Remus rolls his eyes. "Mate, you look at her like she's the sun or something. Of course you like her."
James huffs in frustration. Does he really look at her like that? He doesn't think so.
Remus interrupts his spiraling thoughts. "So why's liking Alina keeping you awake?"
James sighs, his voice dropping even lower. "Because... she said she isn't allowed to date anyone. Only pureblood Slytherins."
Remus sighs, leaning back against the headboard. "And you're supposed to become her friend, right?"
The reminder of the bet hits James like a punch to the gut. He nods.
"Then start there. Be her friend, and maybe she'll warm up to you. Sirius managed to escape all that pureblood nonsense," Remus says, getting out of bed and stretching. "But either forget about the bet, or tell her. It was stupid to begin with."
"I know." James runs a hand through his hair, frustrated. "I think the bet was just an excuse to finally talk to her."
As soon as he says it, he realizes how true it is. He probably would've found some way to talk to her regardless, but the bet pushed him to try harder.
"Then drop it," Remus says with a shrug. "Just be her friend first. You can figure out the rest later." He stretches, his joints cracking.
James gives him a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Moony."
Remus returns the smile, though tired, before disappearing into the bathroom.
Feeling a bit lighter, James gets up and starts getting dressed. He has a letter to send to his mum—and maybe, just maybe, she'll have some advice.
