James Potter POV.

James sneaks into Hogsmeade. It's late—far later than any student should be out—and yet here he is, creeping through one of the many hidden tunnels that lead to the village.

Why?

Because he wants to get that pomegranate candy for Alina.

She's been different these past few days. Tired, her gaze distant during classes, responding only when absolutely necessary.

James tells himself it isn't just because of him—that maybe her exhaustion has other causes—but deep down, he knows better. She's been avoiding him ever since... well, since he royally fucked up. Even at her own house table, she seems withdrawn, her usual sharpness dulled.

So, he thinks, maybe this will help.

It's not as though they've had many meaningful interactions lately. The few they do have always end the same way: with her telling him to fuck off before leaving.

It hurts. It hurts more than he likes to admit. But he understands. He has no one to blame but himself. He made a mistake—an unforgivable one—and now Alina hates him for it.

James lifts his wand, the glow casting long shadows along the packed dirt walls of the tunnel. His footsteps echo faintly, the only sound in the stillness.

This is probably stupid. She'll probably take the candy, glare at him, and walk away without so much as a word. Or worse, throw it back at him.

No, definitely worse—she'll take it, then leave, just like she did when he said...

James swallows hard, forcing the memory back. Thinking about it makes his chest ache, his throat tighten, his eyes sting.

Of course, he has to be understanding. She has every reason to leave—he's messed up, badly. Instead of facing her honestly, he relied on the false courage of a stupid bet just to work up the nerve to talk to her.

Soon, he reaches the end of the tunnel. The wooden door above his head creaks slightly as he pushes it open. James slips through, careful to ease the door shut without a sound, and finds himself in the dark storage room of Honeydukes. The faint scent of sugar and chocolate fills the air, and shelves of candy loom around him, their colorful treasures hidden in the shadows.

Raising his wand higher, James scans the shelves, searching for her favorite treat. He moves quickly but quietly, his heart racing as he nears the section where it should be.

Finally, his eyes land on the small, crimson-wrapped candies. Pomegranate, just as she likes. Without hesitation, he grabs three.

He wraps the candy carefully in a small cloth before tucking it into his pocket. Without wasting another second, he hurries back to the tunnel, gently closing the door behind him before making his way down the narrow passage.

It's late—far too late for her to still be wandering the halls. He'll have to wait until tomorrow to give it to her.

Not that it matters. He'll wait as long as it takes for her. Forever, if he has to.

"No, it's fine," James says to Sirius, forcing yet another smile. It's becoming second nature lately—faking smiles, pretending everything is okay. "I'll catch up with you later."

"You sure?" Sirius asks, tilting his head in concern.

"Yes, I'm sure. I'll see you in class!" James calls back as he hurries away, leaving Sirius to wave dramatically before they go their separate ways.

As soon as Sirius is out of sight, the fake smile slips from James's face. It's not that he doesn't love his friends or feel grateful for them—it's just... everything feels heavy lately, like a weight he can't shake. Pretending to be fine is the only way he can get through it, the only way he knows how. He's been doing it for years.

He turns a corner, his footsteps quickening. He knows exactly where Alina's next class is—maybe a little too well. Is it creepy? Possibly. But he can't help it; his mind just tracks her movements automatically.

And there she is, just a few steps ahead in the corridor.

Her white curls have grown longer, the soft waves framing her face like they're meant to. Against the dim gray of the castle walls, her hair gleams like moonlight. She's beautiful, as always. Her uniform is immaculate, not a thread out of place, and her shoes tap against the stone floor in perfect rhythm.

James speeds up, closing the distance between them.

Alina notices him instantly. Her head snaps toward him, her glare sharp enough to cut glass. "What do you want?" she asks coldly, her voice as icy as her gaze. She doesn't stop walking, so James matches her pace.

"To give you this." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the candy, holding it out to her as they move down the hall.

Her eyes flick down to the small gift, her expression still unreadable. But he catches it—a flicker of recognition, a crack in her cold exterior.

Alina blinks, just once, but it's enough for James to know she feels something. Whether it's surprise, resentment, or something else entirely, he can't tell.

She reaches out and takes the candy, her fingers brushing against his. Her touch is cold, but it sends a rush of warmth through him. They both stop walking.

James feels a spark of hope—fragile and fleeting—that she might say something. Anything. Even if it's to yell at him, to call him out, to make him feel the full weight of what he's done.

Because that's the thing about Alina. Her anger doesn't explode; it freezes. She doesn't shout or lash out. She simply... ignores him. And that silence hurts more than anything else ever could.

Alina's cool, piercing eyes meet his for a moment longer, the candy resting in her palm. Then, without a word, she turns and walks away, her pale hair swaying as she disappears down the hall.

James stands there, watching her retreating figure until it vanishes around the corner. He lets out a shaky breath and turns in the opposite direction, blinking hard against the sting in his eyes.
