James Potter POV.
He is upset. Is upset the right word? James isn't sure. It is the next morning, and yes, James is upset with Sirius.
But over what?
Painting Alina's nails.
But why is he upset over that? It makes no sense. All Sirius did was paint Alina's nails. Maybe he is truly going mad.
What is wrong with him? Sirius is his best friend, his closest friend, his brother. So why is he angry with him? Why is he so upset?
James rubs his eyes, trying to bring himself back to the present.
"Prongs?" Sirius's voice calls him back to their dorm.
James tenses. He doesn't mean for the glare on his face, but it's there as he looks up at Sirius from where he sits on his bed.
Sirius seems shocked at the glare, his eyebrows raised as he turns to look at Remus before looking back at James.
"What?" James asks.
"Are you alright, mate?" Sirius furrows his brows, concern in his eyes from where he leans against the bedpost of Remus's bed. Remus is reading; most of them have a free period right then.
"Fine." The reply is short, clipped. But he can't see past Sirius painting Alina's nails, can't see past how Sirius can grab her hand yet James cannot.
James forces himself to take a deep breath, ignoring the anger. He looks down at his hands, lightly picking at his nails before he looks back up. "I'm sorry, I just..." James lets out a breath before he lies down on his bed, staring at the ceiling.
"I think something's wrong with me," James says, the words a bit low.
"Have you been love-potioned again?" Sirius's voice is closer than usual as he walks over to James's bed.
James furrows his brows. "I... I don't think so."
"Then what's wrong?" Sirius tilts his head slightly.
"You painted Alina's nails," James mumbles.
It is silent for a moment. James opens his eyes, wondering when he had closed them, to look at Sirius. Sirius is trying and failing to cover a smile.
"Don't laugh!" James sits up then.
"I'm not!" But Sirius is smiling as he takes a small step back. "You're jealous!"
"No, I'm not! I don't like her."
"Sure," Sirius drags the word out, nodding with a grin still on his face. "You don't like her."
James opens his mouth to reply, only to glance at the clock behind Sirius. Oh Merlin, he is going to be late for class.
"I'm gonna be late!" James stumbles off his bed, grabbing his bag and waving at his friends before leaving. At least it is true; he hasn't lied. He will be late, but it also helps that he won't have to talk.
