"Nole, you made it," Vanessa smiled, approaching him. Nole nodded and awkwardly held Alec in his arms. It was around lunchtime, and Vanessa had asked Nole to come and check in on Sam. She knew that he probably wouldn't talk to her about what was going on, but maybe he would to Nole.
"I don't like that you're using me to figure out what's going on with Sam, but I'm happy to help," he said. He didn't even greet her. He seemed like he was in a bad mood.
"Better someone find out than he tries to attack Hudson. Or Joel," she mutters. Nole was very aware of the goings on of the ghosts in the Pizzaplex, as Vanessa often would send him updates. He was made aware of Joel and his less than pleasing behaviour towards Vanessa, as well as spreading the comments towards Delilah, despite being almost 10 years younger than the women.
"Yeah fair. Can you take Alec? Or like... tell me who to give him to?" Nole asked. Alec wiggled angrily in his arms.
"Yeah. I saw Devon go by earlier with Edward and Toby, headed towards Monty Golf. You could probably give him to them. Millie has finally been letting Toby have his space, but she's mad about it," Vanessa sighed. Nole nodded and thanked her and walked towards Monty Golf. She hung around the area she was in, waiting for him to come back. She didn't have the night shift tonight, one of the other guards did, but she knew they slept on the job and that the ghosts were gonna keep Joel under control.
"Nessa!" Gregory smiled, running over to her, Cassie following close behind. Vanessa immediately looked worried, since Gregory usually didn't get her unless something was wrong.
"Yes?" she asked, looking at him.
"Can I go to Cassie's house for a playdate?" Gregory asked excitedly.
"Oh. When?" Vanessa asked. It wasn't what she was expecting to hear so she just had to take a second.
"Tonight? It's not a school night for me! Dad's working tomorrow too so we can bring him back tomorrow and leave him with Freddy or something if you weren't there," Cassie pipes in.
"Oh... I'll talk with Clark later, but it should be fine..." Vanessa answered. She didn't know what to say to that, since this was the first time this had happened. She felt like she should be excited for him or worried but didn't know which was more important. Cassie clapped her hands and Gregory looked excited and ran off with Cassie to go goof off. Vanessa fixed her ponytail and continued meandering around the area, waiting for Nole to come back.
"Vanessa," Nole said, jogging over to her. Alec was no longer in his arms.
"You found Devon and them?" she asks.
"Yeah, Alec has now joined them in mini golfing and the kid I hadn't met before looked like he was about to cry so I don't know what to do about that," Nole said.
"Yeah I don't engage with him a lot but he looks sad constantly," Vanessa shrugs. Nole nods and puts his hands in his pockets.
"Where's Sam?" Nole asked.
"He is around here somewhere, and I need to move where I am stationed anyways so we can look for him," Vanessa says, walking with him around a bit. Nole looked a bit uncomfortable.
"What is wrong?" she sighs.
"I don't want to come across the wrong way, but you worry about Sam a lot and I want to ask why?" Nole asked.
"He's the only sane one here besides Delilah and she's self-sufficient and not wearing herself out," Vanessa answered. She didn't understand why he was asking this and gave him an odd look. He looked at her and shifted his arms while he walked.
"Why do you ask?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at him.
"I- uh. Uhm. I don't know-" Nole stumbled over his words and turned his head away from her. She looked at him for a moment and then it clicks in her head why he cares. Maybe Angel was right, but Sam didn't know.
"There's nothing going on between us, don't worry. Does this have anything to do with Angel mentioning that you two hooked up?" Vanessa asked, slightly doing this to push his buttons.
"Why the fuck would you say that?" Nole asked, looking a mix of frustrated and flustered. She chuckles.
"You're an adult Nole, I'm not going to judge you for your taste in people," she says.
"That's not the point. God dammit that girl needs to keep her mouth shut. Personal information should stay personal," Nole muttered.
"I agree. I think Sam already talked to her about it. I just am saying, we aren't going to judge you. Sam is a good person, and he needs help and you're the best person we have for it. If there's more behind that, that's fine. But you might want to talk to him about it," Vanessa says. Nole looks a bit put off by the topic of conversation but nods as they walk.
"Hey Ness," Grady waved, as he walked near them, "need any help?"
"No, no. This is Nole, he's a friend of Sam's. I'm just trying to find Sam since he should be on break soonish," Vanessa said.
"Ah! Right. I think I met you with Delilah one time," Grady nods.
"Yeah. I think so," Nole replies.
"He's up by Bonnie Bowl last thing I knew by the way," Grady smiles. Vanessa and Nole thank him and head up that way. Once there, Nole sees Sam and heads off. Vanessa makes sure they are ok and that Sam goes on his break on time, which he often didn't and forgot to go on break, and then continues her rounds and makes her way down to speak with Clark. They talk and decide that it's fine for Gregory to go, but he won't have a spare change of clothes, since Vanessa can't run home and back before Clark would leave. It'd end up ok, and they'd have fun. Apparently Cassie had been planning it for a while and this was going to be her first sleepover outside of one when she was really young. Clark explained to Vanessa he has it under control and quelled any concerns she had, as he knew what to do and not do for play dates and sleepovers.
