Haeeun stepped through the door of her family's home, a ghost of a smile still lingering on her lips and a little bounce in her step. The weekend trip with the Lee and Na families had been just what she needed—a break from the everyday grind and a chance to enjoy time away from the pressures at home and school.
As she hung up her coat and kicked off her shoes, she was startled to find her mother sitting in the living room, her posture rigid and her gaze fixed on the clock as if counting the minutes until Haeeun's return. Sunha's neatly styled hair and the sharp lines of her tailored suit made her look every bit the formidable businesswoman she was.
"Haeeun!" Sunha's voice cut through the air, stern and expectant. "You're finally home. Where have you been all weekend?"
Haeeun's smile faltered for a moment as she glanced at her mother. She had hoped to avoid any serious conversations upon her return. "Just out," she replied, trying to sound casual as she walked towards the kitchen.
Sunha's eyes narrowed. "Out? You've been gone for two days. Is that all you have to say for yourself?"
Haeeun shrugged, trying to deflect. "It's not really your business, Mom."
Sunha's face flushed with frustration. "Not my business? I'm your mother! And you're ignoring me?"
Haeeun turned back to face her mother, her patience wearing thin. "I just needed a break, okay? Why does it matter so much? And when did you become my mother?"
Sunha stood abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "It matters because you have responsibilities, Haeeun! You can't just run off whenever you feel like it. We need to talk."
The tension between them grew thick, and Haeeun sighed. "I'm not in the mood for this right now."
Sunha's voice rose. "No, you listen to me. You're going to inherit Baek Holdings, and it's high time you started taking it seriously. I want you to come with me to the company now. We're meeting with the directors and managers."
Haeeun's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you serious? I just got back. Can't this wait?"
Sunha's expression hardened. "No, it cannot. This is not optional. You need to understand the magnitude of what you're stepping into. We have important matters to discuss."
"You mean, the divorce?"
"Don't bring the divorce into this."
Haeeun snorted, "I'm liking this family drama a lot. Finally, I felt like being seen after gruesome years."
"Go to your room and dress professionally. I won't take a no. You won't like it when I'm mad, Baek Haeeun."
With a resigned sigh, Haeeun followed her mother's orders. She slipped into the blazer, adjusting the collar with a practiced hand. The fit was impeccable, hugging her shoulders just right. She smoothed out the fabric, feeling the weight of the material both literally and figuratively. The navy skirt completed the look, its sleek lines giving her a more authoritative stance.
She picked up the white blouse from the hanger, making sure it was perfectly pressed. As she buttoned it up, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her hair was pulled back into a low chignon, and she had applied just enough makeup to look polished but not overdone. A touch of mascara and a neutral lipstick gave her a subtle, confident edge.
Out of the house and into the sleek black sedan, the drive to Baek Holdings was tense, with Sunha focusing intently on the road and Haeeun staring out of the window, her thoughts a tangled mess.
