As December rolled in, the world outside transformed into a winter wonderland, each snowflake drifting lazily to the ground. Inside their cozy apartment, however, warmth radiated from every corner, wrapping Haeeun, Donghyuck, and Jaemin in a comforting embrace.
Donghyuck stood at the stove, stirring a pot of soup. The savory aroma filled the air, mingling with the scent of pine from their holiday decorations. He hummed softly to himself, glancing over at Jaemin, who lounged on the couch, absorbed in selecting a playlist of holiday songs.
"Come on, join me! I've got the ultimate holiday jams lined up," Jaemin called, his voice light and teasing.
Haeeun emerged from the bedroom, her cheeks rosy from the cold. She wrapped her arms around herself, relishing the warmth of their shared space. "What's playing?" she asked, curiosity sparking in her eyes.
"Only the best! I was about to play Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande," Jaemin announced, feigning a dramatic flair.
Haeeun groaned playfully. "Not that one again! You know it's like torture for me."
Jaemin laughed, clicking the button anyway. The familiar melody filled the room, and despite her protest, Haeeun couldn't help but hum along.
"Here, taste this!" Donghyuck said, holding up a spoonful of soup. "I need a second opinion."
She took a cautious sip, her eyes lighting up. "Oh, that tastes good."
"Winter chef status achieved!" Donghyuck declared, grinning like he just won over Jaemin, the official chef.
As they settled onto the couch, the warmth of their bond surrounded Haeeun like a favorite blanket. Donghyuck and Jaemin had promised to always care for her, to keep her safe. It felt like home, and she cherished that more than anything.
But beneath the laughter, a weight lingered in her heart—a secret she hadn't shared with them. She was still staying with her cousins at the Kims' house. The family checked in on her daily, their concern evident in their texts and calls. They were her lifeline, but each message felt like a reminder of the split she hadn't yet reconciled.
"Haeeun, you should come for a sleepover this weekend!" Minjeong had said that morning, her excitement infectious. "We can bake cookies and watch all the holiday movies!"
Yerim chimed in, "It'll be way more fun! We'll make it special, I promise!"
Haeeun smiled at their enthusiasm but hesitated. She loved her cousins, but there was something about the throuple dynamic with Donghyuck and Jaemin that made her feel whole in a different way. She didn't want to hurt her cousins, but keeping this from Donghyuck and Jaemin felt heavy.
Later that evening, as they snuggled on the couch with steaming mugs of hot chocolate, she couldn't shake the feeling of being caught in two worlds. Donghyuck and Jaemin were wrapped up in their own banter, laughter spilling easily between them, but a part of her felt distant.
"Hey, you okay?" Donghyuck asked, his voice gentle, pulling her from her thoughts.
Haeeun blinked, surprised by his perceptiveness. "Yeah, I'm fine! Just thinking about the holidays," she said, forcing a smile.
Jaemin leaned closer, his brow furrowed slightly. "You sure? You seem a bit off tonight. We're here for you, you know."
Her heart ached at their concern. She wanted to share everything, to open up, but the words felt stuck in her throat. "I know. It's just... I'm trying to figure things out, that's all."
