Atlas's eyes widened as his father's words struck him like a cold wind. He stammered, a chill running down his spine. "What...?"
"When you were just a child, I was the guardian of your family," Gildarts began. "Your father and I were close friends, and he trusted me more than anyone. One peaceful night, demons surrounded your parents' house. Your mother shielded you while your father fought desperately to protect you. I was there too, fighting by his side."
Gildarts paused, his eyes darkening with the memories. "Your mother held you close, and with a trembling hand, she whispered, 'Alas Sierra,' channeling a white light into you. Meanwhile, outside, your father battled the demons with everything he had. He was winning until a chill filled the air. He turned to find a demon holding a spear, ready to strike. Before he could react, the spear pierced through him."
Atlas's heart pounded, his breath shallow as he listened.
"I rushed to protect your mother and you," Gildarts continued. "But the demon was too powerful. It captured your mother and sneered, 'Heartmiller, your blood is precious. Now it's my turn to savor it.' He grinned wickedly and continued, 'Before you die, know my name, so its fear will haunt you until your last breath.'"
Gildarts's voice shook slightly as he spoke. "I managed to cast a spell, blasting the demon back just long enough for your mother to break free and run to me, clutching you. But then..."
"And then what?" Atlas choked out, tears streaming down his face.
"A spear," Gildarts whispered, his eyes hollow, "stabbed your mother's heart."
Gildarts's words hung in the air like a dark cloud. "The demon laughed, mocking us, 'Do you think that's enough to hurt me? No! I am Thanatos, the strongest demon to ever live. Weaklings like you are no match for me.'"
A shiver ran through Atlas as Gildarts continued, "Your mother turned to me and said, 'Gildarts, take care of Atlas. When the time is right, he will be ready to learn the truth of the Heartmiller family.' Then, with the last of her strength, she cast a spell, sending us far away to safety."
Gildarts finished, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "That is the legacy you bear, Atlas. And now, the time has come for you to face it."
