Chapter 71: Silken Tether
"I'm home," Atlas called out as he stepped into the house, Creed trailing behind him. He glanced around the space, his eyes searching for any sign of his father. “Is Dad at the guildhall?” he mumbled, wandering into the kitchen.
His gaze fell on the table, cluttered with empty bottles of wine. He frowned. “Ugh, he must be drinking, excited for the Moon Festival,” he muttered under his breath. Shaking his head, he began tidying the mess.
Creed, leaning casually against the wall, observed silently for a moment before speaking. “You're a neat and well-groomed person.”
Atlas paused, glancing over his shoulder. “Is that a compliment or a question? 'Cause if it’s a compliment, thank you. If it’s a question, then yes, I am.” He returned to cleaning before adding, “Instead of standing there, why don’t you help me?”
Creed smirked. “I’m going to Hell. See ya.” With that, he vanished into thin air.
“Shithead,” Atlas muttered irritably.
A voice echoed behind him. “I’m still here, hooman.”
Atlas didn’t even flinch, choosing instead to focus on cleaning. Creed sighed. “Take a rest. Don’t die while I’m gone for a while,” he said, his tone surprisingly gentle.
Atlas nodded absently, more focused on finishing the chores. Afterward, he indulged in a warm bath, letting the steam envelop him as he mulled over the past weeks. “Manuscript, huh? What’s next, a time machine?” he mused aloud. Shaking his head, he quickly dried off, dressed, and went straight to bed.
The morning light filtered through the window as Atlas woke up. After a quick glance at the clock on his bedside table, he hurried through a shower and headed to the market.
Walking through the bustling streets, he spotted Nowell in the distance.
“Atlas!” Nowell called, waving enthusiastically.
“Good morning, Nowell,” Atlas greeted with a warm smile.
“He’s so cute!” Nowell thought, his heart skipping a beat. “Where are you headed?” he asked.
“Just picking up some vegetables, fruits, and maybe some meat,” Atlas replied casually.
“Oh,” Nowell said, trying to sound nonchalant. “Where’s Creed?”
Atlas noticed the subtle change in Nowell’s expression. “He’s at his home,” Atlas explained. Then, seeing an opportunity, he added, “Wanna come with me?”
“Yes! I mean… yes,” Nowell stammered, excitement clear in his voice.
The two spent the morning shopping together, laughing and chatting as they navigated the bustling market.
When they finished, they bid each other farewell and returned to their respective homes.
