CHAPTER 38: VERITY

Creed began to answer Atlas’s question, “Well, first of all, I don’t want you to die on this quest. It’s really hard to find someone I can use to enter the human realm.”

“You think I’m weak? I’m strong, you know,” Atlas replied, flexing his small muscle at Creed.

“You call that muscle? Looks like a tree stick to me.” Creed mocked Atlas’s tiny biceps. “Look at me—this is what muscle looks like.” He flexed his left arm, showing off a massive bicep.

Atlas was impressed. He reached out to touch Creed's arm and said, “Whoa, it’s really hard!” Creed suddenly felt uncomfortable and pushed Atlas away, his face slightly flushed.

“Ouch, that hurt!” Atlas yelped.

“Weakling,” Creed muttered. “Anyway, the reason I disappear and reappear is because of your magic power. The stronger the demon, the more magic power it consumes from its summoner. If the summoner can’t handle it, they’d die. But it seems like your body can handle it.”

“Are you crazy?! I feel like I’m dying every time you come out of my body, like my heart’s going to explode!” Atlas complained.

“Well, did you die? No, right? There’s a rare occurrence when a summoner and a demon are ‘matched.’ So far, it’s only happened once in the past. I don’t know if we have that connection, but when a human and a demon match, they can reach their full power—enough to shake the earth.”

“How does that happen?” Atlas asked, curious.

“By having sex,” Creed replied with a straight face.

Atlas was shocked, his mind racing as he imagined intimate moments with Creed. His face turned bright red, as if steam was rising from his head.

“That’s okay if you don’t want to,” Creed said casually. “Now, your turn. What’s the purpose of this quest, hooman?”

Atlas looked up at the sky, staring at the stars, and opened his palm. A small light, resembling a star, appeared. “I want to learn about the Heartmiller family.”

At the mention of "Heartmiller," Creed flinched. “Heartmiller,” he thought to himself.

“There was a legendary wizard named Larcade Heartmiller who lived long ago. He was the first to discover magic and passed it down to his ten apprentices, known as the Ten Wizard Legacy. But three of his apprentices rebelled, seeking to surpass Larcade’s power. Two were punished by the gods for their misuse of magic, but one escaped, using invisibility to hide. The other seven passed on their knowledge to new apprentices, which is why many mages exist today. But over time, the full extent of their power was lost,” Atlas explained, a look of sorrow crossing his face.

Creed listened intently, focusing on every word Atlas said.

“Larcade left behind a manuscript containing all his magic power, spells, and chants. It’s said to be so powerful that it could make the heavens roar if used improperly. That’s why Larcade vanished, and now, many people are searching for the manuscript,” Atlas continued.

Creed looked up at the sky and then patted Atlas on the head. “I understand. You’ve got this, kid,” he said, his deep voice unexpectedly soothing Atlas’s heart.

Atlas added, “The manuscript also contains forbidden magic—magic so powerful that it was lost to time. It’s called the Time Arc.”

“Time manipulation? I thought that kind of magic didn’t exist,” Creed replied.

“Time manipulation can mean a lot of things—not just traveling through time but rewriting history itself. It’s also powerful enough to remove all curses from the world,” Atlas said.

“Remove curses…” Creed muttered.

Suddenly, Creed grabbed his head in pain. “What is this? My head… it’s burning!” he yelled, panting.

“Are you okay?” Atlas asked, moving closer. Creed collapsed onto the ground, writhing in agony. “What is this? Ugh, it’s burning!” he screamed.

Atlas hurried over, casting a healing spell. He placed his palm over Creed, but then Creed stopped moving.

“Creed? Hey, Creed?! Are you okay?” Atlas’s voice trembled with fear as his face grew pale. “Hey, Creed! Wake up!” He shook Creed’s shoulders, panic setting in as Creed’s body grew cold.
