Signals of Suspicion
Aurora, curious, asked, "And what happens if they don't find their mate?"
Edwin, "Well, in the end, they form a relationship with someone else."
Aurora raised an eyebrow, intrigued, "Oh, so that happens too? Does this mean that in your society, people also go against your Moon Goddess and leave their mate to form a relationship with someone else?"
Edwin nodded slightly, "Usually not, but there are some who, for certain reasons, can't stay with their mate, so they move on."
He paused before explaining further: "For example, if someone's mate dies, or if they get divorced, or if one mate rejects the other, in such cases, they form a relationship with someone else. But most werewolves try to avoid doing that."
Aurora smiled softly, absorbing the information, "Oh."
Edwin glanced away momentarily, then continued, "And yes, I was born here, but I was living abroad for my studies. My work is also there. But when news of the fight came, all the werewolves from the Moobridge pack were called here for protection."
"I see." Aurora tilted her head, narrowing her eyes, " So, the excuse that you came here for work is just a cover for why you're really here?"
Edwin said, "Yes."
Aurora crossed her arms, leaning in a bit, "So, what do you do for work?"
Edwin, straightening up slightly, "I'm in the real estate business. My business is going well. In real estate, there's land and properties, including planning, construction, and marketing. And..."
He started explaining more in detail, describing how his business operates, what kind of properties he deals with, and how his company manages various projects. He spoke about different departments and how smoothly everything ran under his watch.
Aurora listened, and after a moment, she said with a smile, "Well, since this business is your family business, you must be the owner of the company. So, is your position that of the CEO?"
Edwin laughed softly and, shaking his head, said, "I am the owner of this business, but for the position of CEO, I have chosen very experienced industrial professionals. Both the CEO and the owner have a lot of responsibilities, and obviously, I could manage all the work together, And even if I manage it somehow, I will still not get my own personal time. Managing so many things at once is not easy, which is why it was best to divide the work."
Aurora responded with a quiet, "Oh."
"Wait a minute," Edwin paused, giving her a playful look. "You weren't expecting me to be the CEO just so you could feel like the heroine from your favorite novel, The CEO Fell for Me, were you?"
The CEO Fell for Me is a popular romantic novel, and like many girls, Aurora adores these kinds of cheesy love stories.
Hearing Edwin's words, Aurora was taken aback and quickly asked, "How do you even know that, Edwin?"
"And earlier, you knew about my friend Lily too. How? I never told you anything about her."
Finally, Edwin confessed, "Look, Aurora, I did a background check on you."
"Huh?!!" Aurora shot up from her seat, her face full of anger. "So you violated my privacy without asking me? Edwin-"
"I know this was wrong," Edwin said, apologetically. "But what could I do? Ever since I saw you, I wanted to know everything about you. From your heart to your smallest details, I wanted to understand everything about your life. That's why-"
Initially, Aurora was very angry with Edwin for invading her privacy like this, but after Edwin pleaded with her and explained himself, she finally forgave him, considering it his first mistake. After that, they continued talking for a while longer until her lunch break was over. Before leaving, Edwin gave Aurora his phone number also.
A few days passed, and Aurora and Edwin continued to talk during their free time or over calls. Aurora even introduced Edwin to her friend Lily.
One quiet Tuesday evening, Aurora noticed something strange for the first time. She was closing up the café, wiping down the last table, when she heard a distant howling. At first, she thought it was just a dog, but then a thought struck her.
"What was that?" she murmured, her brow furrowing.
The sound echoed again-a haunting howl, distant yet unmistakably powerful.
She said, shaking her head in disbelief. "But no, that howl was much louder!"
A chilling thought crossed her mind. "Wait... Could it be one of them?"
Aurora leaned against the counter, " But why would any werewolf howl so openly like that? Aren't they afraid of being caught? The government could send them away for experiments or something...!"
She recalled her conversations with Edwin. "Even he told me that werewolves have no intention of revealing their secrets to humans. It's better that their truth remains hidden."Just as her thoughts spiraled, a sudden announcement echoed from outside.
"Attention! Attention!"
Startled, Aurora rushed to the window. A local police vehicle rolled by, its loudspeaker blaring. "We request everyone to immediately return to their homes or a safe place and lock their doors and windows."
As the police vehicle continued down the street, "This is to inform you that some suspicious activities are happening in the town. Therefore, we request everyone to not stay outside and return to your homes as soon as possible."
Hearing this, the people on the street, including Aurora, obviously felt scared.
She could see the expressions of confusion and fear on the faces of the people walking by. Some glanced nervously at each other, while others hurriedly checked their phones, some important notification has arrived.
However, everyone gradually obeyed the police's instructions. Gradually, the crowd began to disperse, people closing up their shops and turning on their heels to head home, casting furtive glances over their shoulders.
Aurora's phone had also received an alert message from the local police, along with all the others living here.
Aurora's heart pounded as she exchanged worried glances with herself in the reflection of the glass. "This can't be good," she whispered, nervousness creeping in as she moved to lock the café door.
